A science fiction obsession led me to psychological war. I spent the past three years researching and writing a book about the history of psychological warfare in the United States, and it's coming out in early June. Not all the gems I discovered could be crammed into the final manuscript, and I've been dying to share what I found in the archives ... check out my latest newsletter to see some amazing treasures from a history that's rarely told.

@annaleen I have a copy actually signed by Linebarger (signed for a colleague of his; I bought it used many years later and found the signature and verified it with his daughter).

@annaleen

I saw this and immediately assumed it had something to do with Cordwainer Smith. So I follow the link and, no, it has everything to do with Cordwainer Smith.

@jackwilliambell I went ALL THE WAY down the rabbit hole

@annaleen

  1. Preordered.
  2. My 1st Cordwainer Smith was “Mark Elf”; the manshonyagger stuck with me a long time. What haunts me is “No, No, Not Rogov!” I was watching Olympic Figure Skating then, and I empathized with the performer.
  3. Interesting the writers who were were in Intelligence during WWII: Linebarger, John D. McDonald, Eric Russell, Alice Sheldon. And shoutout to Christopher Lee, an assassin in WWII, who said: “No, that’s not the sound a knife makes cutting the throat of a guard.”

@annaleen Did your research lead you to read Nancy Fraser's Cannibal Capitalism?

annaleen,
@annaleen@wandering.shop avatar

@Richard nope but it looks like my jam

Richard,

@annaleen I'm sorry, I misremembered. I meant to say Naomi Klein's The Shock Doctrine (I read them at the same time a while back now). The Shock Doctrine is the one more relevant to your research. But be warned, it is not an easy read. Lots of triggers.

annaleen,
@annaleen@wandering.shop avatar

@Richard yeah it's definitely relevant. I was in conversation with her about her new book Doppelganger when she came to the Bay Area last year.

@annaleen For added lulz, you might want to glance at the history of Major-General J. F. C. Fuller, author of Plan 1919 (for ending WW1), who invented what became known as Blitzkrieg warfare. He later became one of the leaders of the British Union of Fascists … and was an occultist and a member of Aleister Crowley's magical order the A∴A∴ before feuding with Crowley (like everyone else).

@cstross @annaleen
Crowley bragged of eating the shit of Mexican prostitutes. I suspect that was bullshit.
