Just been reading the last chapter. (Yes, I’m reading the last chapter first; blame the doc for this 🤷🏻‍♀️)

It is every bit breathtaking as @Impossible_PhD suggests.

@aparna My next SGW article is, well...

I do science explaining, after all.

(Title is tentative, obviously)

OftOverthinking,

@aparna

Just finished it last night. Still forming my thoughts.

@OftOverthinking This bit resonated with me quite a bit. You become “Extremely Woman” (“mujerísima”) by modestly being good enough (“suficientemente bueno”) per your definition.

I hope I got it right, @Impossible_PhD Trying to summarise here.

@aparna @OftOverthinking I think it's mostly the other way around--that overwhelming womanhood is idiosyncratic, dynamic, prone to change, and that there is no one goal--and that those goals shift and change over time. So, you don't go for perfection or idealism, but the practical goodness that fits that current instantiation, knowing and embracing the possible later change--that you got it "wrong" earlier--as a wonderful thing, not a frightful one.

@Impossible_PhD @OftOverthinking Didn’t express it well (see, this is why you should be in the newsletter writing business 😀) but yes; my understanding is exactly what you shared.

No perfect goal, certainly none set by others; you are good enough per what you’ve set for yourself. 😊

OftOverthinking,

@aparna @Impossible_PhD

I didn't interpret these ideas as individual goals. Interpreted them as ideas for (un)definitions of trans not/identity.

The urge is to stop trying to define what other people are, but if you must make laws make them open.

It is violence done to the travestis is instructing them on who they are.

But my mind hasn't processed enough yet to understand how maximal-femme isn't also yet another box.

OftOverthinking,

@aparna @Impossible_PhD

I am also processing whether I can, as I want, claim I am descended from the street queens, or if I am not in fact something uglier than that.

Am I not rather engaged in the gentrification of the neighborhood that belonged to the street queen?

The LGB community now established securely enough that we are able to move in? Drowning out the values and needs of the street queens that lived here before?

(This glass is now half-empty)

@OftOverthinking @aparna That's what colonialist trans-feminization did to almost all like them. The best we can do is tear down those structures, work to make space for what there is now in a more just way, and move forward.

Remaking what has been lost is futility itself.

OftOverthinking,

@Impossible_PhD @aparna

Wherever the street queens once lived, I don't think we can say they are gone. In sex work many have gone digital - there's more than there ever were before.

They've emigrated to much of the rest of the world as well.

Of course there's good work for us all to do, tearing down the tools of oppression and guarding against new ones.

Leaving open space though is hard. We, not engaged in sex work, will be seen as the new face of the queens.

IDK. Still thinking.

@Impossible_PhD @OftOverthinking When I teach, I get mildly annoyed when my students start discussing my reading material with me even before class.

So in that spirit, will hold off discussion until after you’ve published your piece 😊

@aparna @OftOverthinking It'll be a week or two. Feel free.
