PEOPLE, I BEG YOU
post links directly to the source, don't use Apple News or Bitly or other links hijackers. if they decide to change the service or go out of business, we have lost link to the original source.

keep the web as open as possible. say no to link shorteners and traffic hijackers 👍🏾

@blogdiva
Also:

  • don't click them
  • don't share posts that include them

They are a menace.

To privacy as well as future abuse or failures.

Same for Twitter links.

@blogdiva What about DOI?

WilsonSmith,
@WilsonSmith@c.im avatar

@sciencebase @blogdiva DOI is to a specific DOCUMENT . So that should be eternal.

sciencebase,
@sciencebase@mastodon.social avatar

@WilsonSmith @blogdiva I hope somebody has backed up the list of all those millions of DOIs

WilsonSmith,

@WilsonSmith @blogdiva Have they got a remote backup that's independent of the organisation?

WilsonSmith,
@WilsonSmith@c.im avatar

@sciencebase @WilsonSmith @blogdiva

I would assume since DOI is worldwide . I would make sense that the library files are mirrored and updated too.

sciencebase,
@sciencebase@mastodon.social avatar

@WilsonSmith Yes, must be, it's been around a long time, of course.I think I first used it when I was editing the first ever online chemistry conference back in 1995

Deus,

@blogdiva Would be nice to 'request' people (or outlets here) to remove utmsource=mastodon etc too?

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@blogdiva First, I totally agree... Second, as someone who has been blogging since 1997 you can't trust any company to keep links alive.

I have URLs that have not changed in over two decades and old posts of mine link to sooooo many 404 pages because companies moved things around, or shut down, or whatever.

The personal web sometimes has more staying power than the corporate web.

Biohazardous,
@Biohazardous@mastodon.social avatar

@rasterweb @blogdiva I have an Overseerr page set up for my friends and it tickles me that there's this teeny website that literally runs off one of the machines in my back room. The concept amuses me.

LinuxAndYarn,
@LinuxAndYarn@mastodon.social avatar

@blogdiva I usually use msn for links that people will need to bypass a paywall or popover, and thought folks were using apple news the same way. Otherwise, direct is best.

But bitly, tdotco, etc, are the devils.

@LinuxAndYarn @blogdiva If you want to bypass a paywall use the Web page archive. Link here:

LLS,
@LLS@wandering.shop avatar

@blogdiva I set up filters to block the lot of them. Nope! Nope! Nope!

ChasMusic,
@ChasMusic@ohai.social avatar

@LLS @blogdiva Is there a list I can do filters for?

LLS,
@LLS@wandering.shop avatar

@ChasMusic @blogdiva I have filters for bit•ly, tiny•url, t•co, apple•news, flip•it bc I don’t want to deal with mystery meat tracker urls. I also filter out xitter and the Meta urls bc if I wanted to see that crap I’d be logging in there
