I seriously do not understand the difference between UEB and whatever I learned when I was little. I’ve been working with it for days now and nothing looks any different.

we_are_spc,

@evilcookies98 There are several contractions that are no longer the. The dots 5-6+Y and the Dot six+Y are two of those. The words and the are no longer place becide each other in adjoining cells, etc.-T

@evilcookies98 guess it matters how well you knew Grade 2 in the first place.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@VE3RWJ i’ve been reading it for years, but I wasn’t allowed to ride it in school because my translator was too lazy to take the extra time to learn it. My hands did not like me in those days.

dhamlinmusic,

@evilcookies98 So there are no longer any times where omitting spaces between words is allowed, the com, by, to, ble, and dd contractions are gone, along with things like the o'clock one to list a few things.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@dhamlinmusic I tried to use one of those a couple of days ago and could not figure out why it wouldn’t work. Thank you for enlightening me. As for the spaces thing, thank God. That was annoying, especially while in the I’m still learning phase.

Lino_JR,

@dhamlinmusic @evilcookies98 I hate they eliminated those! I miss typing ble and dots 2-3-5 for the word to. Meh BANA!

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@Lino_JR @dhamlinmusic I understand why they did it though. Those are also punctuation symbols that are commonly used and confused the crap out of people.

Lino_JR,

@evilcookies98 @dhamlinmusic My wife hates UEB.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@Lino_JR @dhamlinmusic it seems to be a very polarizing issue in some parts of the universe still.

Rich,

@evilcookies98 They got rid of some contractions, changed the spacing a bit, and changed some punctuation.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@Rich I guess I just don’t use whatever they got rid of because I have yet to bump into it.

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 I was there when they got rid of the old Braille code. At the very meeting where the voting took place. It isn't that different but by God when I was a kid, it really pissed me off.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@rooktallon I wasn’t so much mad as I was a little freaked about having to possibly relearn absolutely everything. It’s easy enough to learn to read when you’re five, but being forced to relearn it a bunch of years later would not be fun.

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 It was hilarious I competed in the Braille Challenge as a kid twice without studying the Braille Code at all. First time, I got 3rd place in my region, second time, I won it.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@rooktallon I think I was in three times. Got second place twice and nothing once.

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 Yeah, wasn't good enough to get into Nationals but I wasn't aiming for it either. I just wanted to win regionals.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@rooktallon I just thought it was fun. One year I didn’t even show up and they accidentally sent me a certificate anyway, so I tell people I got a certificate for doing nothing.

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 Lol, that's funny.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@rooktallon I was supposed to go but snow happened.

ratking,

@evilcookies98 It's really subtle, contractions are handled differently.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking oh? Must be some that didn’t get used a lot because I haven’t seen anything. I can read fine, but my typing is rusty and that bothers me. That should not have been allowed to happen.

ratking,

@evilcookies98 I can ead UEB but cant' write it.

JamminJerry,
@JamminJerry@mastodon.stickbear.me avatar

@ratking @evilcookies98 I don't know anything about UEB, as I always set anything to grade 2 Braille. I am too old to learn a new Braille thing, hell, I have a hard enough time reading grade 2, and I am even slower with grade 1. this dog is too old, and cranky to teach a new trick like learning UEB Braille.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking sometimes I’ll miss keys because I’m so used to a regular keyboard

ratking,

@evilcookies98 i can usually switch between standard and braille really easy, not too big of an issue for me

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking I guess my problem is I’ve been typing almost exclusively on a regular keyboard for a lot of years now because Braille displays are absurdly expensive
