I know some people won't be able to avoid it (including myself, they'll probably upgrade my work laptop to it sooner than later), but for my personal stuff, literally everything I've seen about Windows 11 so far suggests logically to ABSOLUTELY AVOID THIS SOFTWARE AT ALL COSTS

@jake4480

Yeah earlier I was reading about advertisements in the start menu and about Microsoft being more aggressive about pushing people to upgrade.

@ektotherm yeah, and supposedly you can turn some/all off by reverting back to the old view? Something like that. But still. Shouldn't have to!

faylen,

@jake4480 Sadly both new computers I have have that on them. But it does seem like MS is sticking to their pattern of every two versions of windows is awful.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@faylen ha! Ah, yeah that's probably true. I haven't really liked ant since 98 or 2000 probably, just put up with them, but 11 feels like insult to injury. My laptop with 10 keeps nagging me to update but there's no way 🤣

@jake4480 I have it installed. Only for games, really. Also, a couple of audio programs that I can't run on Linux. It is what it is, but I don't think I'll be upgrading to a new version of Windows ever again.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@wendigo yeah, as I think we've talked about, I had a BAD experience upgrading 7 to 8 on my wife's old laptop, bricked it. Very wary of upgrading any version of Windows on any computer I need to be able to use hahaha

wendigo,
@wendigo@metalhead.club avatar

@jake4480 Well, I never upgrade per se, I always do a clean install. Windows 8 was junk, though. Like I said, Windows is what it is, but sometimes I have to suffer it for certain things. Plus, I do like to keep my hand in, even if I loathe Microsoft. Did you see where MS-DOS went open-source?

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@wendigo hahaha. And YEAH I did see DOS open source! woww. Yeah, I'm not a fan of Microsoft or ANY of these big companies but yeah as we said, we still end up giving to em. Sigh haha. As long as I can kinda minimize it as much as I possibly can, that's all that matters, at least to me. You can only do so much 😂 😬

skullvalanche,
@skullvalanche@gladtech.social avatar

@jake4480 ... Linux?

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@skullvalanche oh, yeah that's the way I'm gonna go. My Windows 2000 machine could probably use it, and any personal laptop in the future, I can't see going any other way.

DanielTuttle,
@DanielTuttle@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 I've barely noticed a difference between this and 10. UI changes a tad but once I got used to it ¯_(ツ)_/¯

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@DanielTuttle really -- I saw you can at least turn some of the stuff off, make it at least look like an older version? But the ads they're talking about, and a watermark that shows you don't use the AI with it? I mean ughhhh hahaha
