The slow collapse of downtown commercial real estate is continuing. I suspect news like this, and stories about the decline of retail around downtowns that depend on daily commuter traffic will come in at faster and faster rates.

Workers are not returning to the office to work. and are showing to be a perfectly viable solution that is more friendly to workers. Even with hybrid work, the volume of people commuting is far lower than it used to be.

is slowly declining to a new, lower-value equilibrium.

@drahardja Perhaps those with a stake the value of downtown and commercial real estate should lobby to increase the availability and quality of public transportation.

It'd sure be a lot easier to go to the office if it was a comfortable ride unaffected by traffic. And offices would need far less parking.

Eh, it won't happen. But it would make sense.

@anji I think they would sooner get their friends in City Hall to mandate return-to-office.

All of this is a good thing. We do need plans to convert downtown to mixed use, though.

@EverydayMoggie I agree, this is good. The best outcome would be if some of these buildings were converted into housing. Then, downtown retail would return, but it would be because people lived there, not just traveled there five days a week.
