In my house, there is a door in the kitchen that goes to the basement stairs. We put a cat door in it, and a fancy one at that. It has switches so that you can control which directions the cats can move. We needed this because our 3-year-old cat Janet wants to play, and 8-year-old Phoebe does not, so Janet ends up in time out to give Phoebe a break. It took Janet MONTHS to figure out the door as a concept. This week she figured out the switches and time-out is no more.

@night_chrono what you can do is get a cat flap that has a magnetic key and lock on it.

We got one for our cat years ago so she could get into her food while we were away and the neighbourhood cats couldn't.

If you put the key only on one cats collar then only that can pass into a break room.

Unless Janet works out magnetism

@Bridgemakes She is a poly-dactyl tortie so she might out of pure tortie-tude spite.

But seriously thanks for the suggestion.

The reason this is such a big deal is we need to keep the door closed once we have a toddler so they don't take a tumble down the stairs. My wife and I are adopting and that is a requirement of the home study.

@night_chrono @Bridgemakes They also have them that can be keyed to the cats microchips if they have them:

@mikey @Bridgemakes Janet has a chip. She is very friendly and curious. She always wants to know what is on the other side of the door and for any random stranger she will roll over and beg to be picked up and carried.

@night_chrono @Bridgemakes Those units, while expensive, can be programmed with I think up to 80 unique chip IDs . I don't know how complicated the process is. I also know they have collars that replace the chip IDs. You could possibly add and remove IDs to decide when kitties are allowed through and when they are not.
