It just struck me what Apple got wrong with its “crushing ad.”

They thought we would identify with the iPad, not the creative instruments and materials.

pixelscience,
@pixelscience@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf Honestly, since 2016 who hasn’t felt crushed by life generally?

TheSilentDawn,
@TheSilentDawn@mastodon.social avatar

@pixelscience @glennf I think that’s it exactly. Fundamentally I don’t think the ad is that bad but rhe zeitgeist through which it’s viewed is a lot darker. It’s not quirky, it’s an act of destructive.

scottmichaud,
@scottmichaud@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@glennf Interesting thought.

Personally I think their mindset was more "We're compressing human art and innovation" when it looked more like "Fear my crushing presence, humanity!"

xenolon,
@xenolon@hachyderm.io avatar

@glennf I gotta disagree. What they got wrong was the action. The crushing itself. Had it been something like the the iPad was linking or connecting all those pieces, absorbing and combining them, it wouldn't have grated.

It was the destruction and elimination of beloved analog skills and tools.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@xenolon Different facets of the same problem. I'm talking conceptual; you're talking practical. But same issue. If they had put themselves in the place of a creative person…

ollicle,
@ollicle@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf it’s that simple.

The iPhone ad was nice and nerdy. Why not an iPad ad “it’s bigger on the inside” with:

  • Dr Who Tardis references.
  • Bag of holding D&D references.

@glennf @JonChevreau

I look forward to a smart filmmaker retort that demonstrates everything an ipad can not do when it comes to all the artistic items they crushed.

dbergey,
@dbergey@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf I had to tell myself that piano had to have already been broken beyond all hope. And all the other things too. I don't remember what they were, and I don't really want to watch it again.

Serenus,
@Serenus@mas.to avatar

@dbergey If it makes you feel better, I’m 99% sure that was all CGI, or at least that’s what I’m telling myself.

octothorpe,
@octothorpe@mastodon.online avatar

@glennf it felt like an advert a bean counter would make.

Could you imagine Miles Davis watching his horn crushed and being like ‘hey that’s cool!’

dimsumthinking,
@dimsumthinking@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf I think it would have had a whole different feel if we saw everything shrinking and not getting destroyed so the implication was "you get all this stuff in the new iPad" not "here's the stuff we're crushing and replacing with the new iPad"

VonWalther,
@VonWalther@hachyderm.io avatar

@glennf we humans like our stuff, see Gorge Carlin

@benjohn you didn’t miss nuffink

letterror,
@letterror@typo.social avatar

@glennf Destroying musical instruments is hardly ever a positive act.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@letterror Still reeling that they thought anyone would like this

celiason,
@celiason@typo.social avatar

@letterror @glennf love that there’s a Wikipedia page on this! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instrument_destruction

letterror,
@letterror@typo.social avatar

@celiason @glennf huh! I once saw a recreation of a Fluxus happening in which a piano was smashed. Hard to watch. Maybe that was the point, but if that was the point it was low and easy. I dunno.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@letterror @celiason Too easy to identify with the craftspeople who made the piano rather than the piano as a material commercial object that can be acted upon.

letterror,
@letterror@typo.social avatar

@glennf @celiason I just thought there would be a kid who’d love to play but can’t afford one.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@letterror The piano surplus is pretty huge in America. Like to the extend that they are being trashed, even good ones. If we wanted a good-quality upright, we could easily get one free within a week in Seattle for the trouble of moving it.

notroot,

@glennf @letterror YyyyyyyyyyyyuuuuuuuuuP. The most I've ever paid for a piano was $200 -- and that's a 1968 Baldwin console piano. Of the four pianos owned by my immediate family, that's the ONLY one that cost ANYTHING. The rest were all free.

letterror,
@letterror@typo.social avatar

@notroot @glennf piano prices the the low lands are not like that.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@letterror @notroot Yes, we are a land of waste and plenty.

JTDType,
@JTDType@typo.social avatar

@letterror @glennf Well, I had a good time doing it.

Luke,
@Luke@typo.social avatar

@JTDType @letterror @glennf Wtaf that’s an amazing shot, J.

JTDType,
@JTDType@typo.social avatar

@Luke @letterror @glennf Haha, oddly enough, Taylor took it back in 2003, about 7 years before we ever started dating.

I smashed another guitar when we were on tour in Minneapolis (because the headstock cracked in the car during the drive), but I can’t find the photos from that show.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@JTDType @Luke @letterror Compositionally, though, it looks like you are in horror of discovering a disembodied guitar on a red mat, laid out like a dissection

alexhammy,
@alexhammy@hachyderm.io avatar

@glennf @ernie has a great write up on this in Tedium, and agrees with this point. People think a hydraulic press is that thing they see on youtube crushing stuff to death. Apple's ad thinks that a hydraulic press is a tool that's used to combine parts into a greater whole.

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

@alexhammy @glennf My favorite hydraulic press videos are where the material is so strong that it ends up damaging the set.

I’d like to think that the response to this ad was the social media version of that kind of video.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@ernie bravo!!
