Privacy is dead, and all of your data, including medical information, is constantly being sold to the highest bidder. This is a terrible situation, and there should be strict regulations for those who are breaking the law. Source https://www.threads.net/@thebrianpenny/post/C6y2ckfxaDj/

words_number,

@nixCraft Wow, absolutely disgusting! I am kinda intrigued to try brilliant.org though to be honest...

Edit: Sry, this was meant as a response to @lycanmatriarch

It's the main reason I wouldn't use one of these services even if I felt I needed to. Sooner or later it will transpire that not only patient information was leaked, recordings of actual sessions were leaked out somehow subpoenaed away from those services into the hands of the government.

Even if I could sign up and pay anonymously they would still have enough audio or video material to identify me.

@nixCraft @BenjaminHCCarr reminder that BetterHelp also does not pay well their staff, mainly - the therapists - who they treat just like a commodity. So don't use them. Find a physical person to go to. Everyone will win.

@nixCraft UC health used a 3rd party to keep our medical records n it was hacked in March 2024. All of our private data just "poof" stolen. Also wasn't able to use their pharmacy for new prescriptions bc of back log on cleaning up the mess.

@nixCraft

I used BetterHelp, and it did help.

They did a lot to make it accessible to me when times were not so great. I was convinced they believed in their mission of making mental health care more accessible.

Then I read about this case. I was really disappointed in them. I will never use them again.

Silicon Valley needs to stop calling people "users". Maybe if they did they would learn basic respect for other human beings.

@nixCraft Its not just online therapy either. Everything you say to inperson therapists too never stays with them. I promise you that

Everything is about money in the end. Its all one big circle of bullshit. People shouldn't be surprised when people dont trust therapy, and its disgusting to accuse someone of not wanting help because they refuse to go to therapy

Nah fam, it doesn't work and nothing is ever truly private, so I do not feel safe. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

aphenglow,

@nixCraft this is insane. These people should be in jail.

@nixCraft WoW so I can't trust teen counseling either.

@nixCraft This is exactly what gives me pause on trying out Zocdoc (which sponsors a ton of podcasts I listen to).

@nixCraft Maybe I'm too old for that, but the very idea of doing online mental health counseling is baffling to me. And trusting a purely commercial company with my most private thoughts and feelings would never occur to me.

Of course, times are changing, along with personal risk assessments, but I wonder where people's personal responsibility comes in.

mcfly,
@mcfly@milliways.social avatar

@riaschissl @nixCraft the personal responsibility is with the managers making the decision to sell the health data and they should go to jail.

Also don't trust your personal data with online therapy but .... The responsibilty is with those managers.
