“The fediverse will dominate because it’s open”

Nope. Open is defined by what it is not, not by what it is. The only people who think “open” is an inherently good quality are the same people who will use shitty, barely functional software because all the alternatives don’t have the “correct” licensing agreement.

Twitter was never open, and even before it went shitty, it was succeeding.

Why?

Not, as the mastonerds desperately want you to believe, because of some vampire-level mind-clouding algorithm (we’ll discuss the complete lack of critical thinking of mastonerd “logic”) but because it had the things non-techies want:

  1. easy to use and understand. Like trivially. Most of the early Twitter lecturing was about “twittiquette”, not basic use. I mean, you could use Twitter via SMS. As close to frictionless as possible.

  1. you could find the people and communities easy. Yes, there were awful people, Twitter’s moderation has always sucked, but early on, its architecture made it easy to be on and find people/orgs you wanted. And for all the “DO YOU WANT A BILLIONAIRE TO CONTROL YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA” noise, is having your social media controlled by random fights between server admins or my instance being cut off because a bunch of other instances decide they don’t like a single person? (All of which have been issues)

Just because your shit is jacked by a server admin who decides “fuck this shit, I’m out” instead of a petulant rich kid, it’s still jacked and S P A R E M E the endless fucking nonsense, the lie that switching instances is trivial, if not effortless.

It is a pain in the ass and moving your content over, which is the important part, not your fucking follower/followed lists.

(For all the “follower count isn’t important noise, mastonerds care more about followers/following than the content. Yet another way mastonerds are unbearably hypocritical.)

  1. useful features were implemented in a way that benefitted the entire user base. There was feature consistency. None of which exists on the fediverse to where it can cause problems. Minor problems maybe, but also unnecessary ones.

To be on the fediverse is to not only be nibbled to death by baby ducks, but to be attacked when you say “hey, maybe we don’t have to be bit constantly.”

If the fediverse’s only plan to succeed by what it is not instead of what it is, then it needs to get over this fantasy of being the endgame for Twitter/facebook.

For fucks’ sake, make this shit better for people who can’t code and have never heard of sysctl. Make real privacy a priority. Make usability a fucking priority.

Make the things non-techies care about as important as your insufferable bleeting about how less awful you are than everyone else.

Or sit there forever and wonder why every other new thing gets all the attention.

🤷‍♂️

Addendum: I’d love to see mastodon/the fediverse succeed, wildly so.

But the religion/cultism has got to be purged. Pay attention to what people actually want. Don’t blindly chase them, but don’t blindly reject it because it is “not of the body.”

Landru is nobody’s friend.

@bynkii
There’s a difference between choosing to join a service and aggressively promoting said service. If someone uses their bully pulpit to promote Threads they deserve to be scorned for it.

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@freediverx the important thing is they make sure you’re happy with all their decisions.

Yep, absolutely sure I’m not pushing any of my friends to mastodon.

oscherler,

@bynkii They don’t wonder why every other new thing gets all the attention, they judge other people for giving anything else even a shred of attention, so there’s no incentive for them to change their mindset: judging other people on social média is their purpose in life.

@bynkii I agree with 90% of your thinking here, but the reason people care so much about followers/following is that with no algorithm that’s the only way to get content or get noticed. Which is what makes defederation spats so damaging, because even if the admins kiss and make up and refederate all those followers/following relationships need to be rebuilt. (See that @dice.camp in my handle? Been there, got the scars.)

bynkii,
@bynkii@mastodon.social avatar

@pooserville honestly, I have no problem with caring. It’s the lie of “followers don’t matter, fllower counts don’t matter”, on and on.

It’s the pretense that annoys me, and the utter dismissal of the content people create here.

WTF, what good is an account without content?
