This PBS Eons video claims we’ve seen animals self-medicating lots of times before, but the recent crazy discovery is that we observed some apes giving medical care to each other (something we previously thought was unique to hominids).

Edit: Ah, I see: the Nature article is about treating a wound specifically, as opposed to an illness.
