It's funny how people who talk about web dev believe that a very particular set of "modern", JS-heavy, build-heavy practices are the only thing worth discussing, while continues to quietly take over everything.

@tomw likely one factor for NASA was long-term maintainability. Not something the modern, JS-heavy practices particularly shine at.

@danjac Yes absolutely

@tomw what happened to ? Is that still relevant and used ?

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@yeri Well, I would say no.

Probably someone will show up to say they use it. But I've tried and ouch.

cbeier,

@tomw @yeri I don't have an exact overview of the CMS market. But I/we still use Drupal a lot. But now more as a foundation/backend for business and process applications.

@tomw @yeri If you liked Drupal (but not as much modern Drupal), give Backdrop a spin sometime just for fun. https://backdropcms.org.

tomw,

@NonprofitBackdrop @yeri I didn't like Drupal though

Drupal is still around, but it's focus has shifted to large enterprise projects. The number of Drupal sites is dropping, but average size of new Drupal sites is likely growing quite a bit.

The community is still very active.

I use Drupal for some larger projects, but I use Backdrop CMS (Drupal fork) for smaller simplier projects.

Backdrop CMS is something in between Drupal and Wordpress and is focused on non-profits and small businesses.

@tomw they got burned by Drupal, they wanted to switch to a common, well supported platform for their next content-heavy site (though, a huge number of exploits are Wordpress related, so I hope they stay on top of that). The new wp editor is very Javascript heavy. https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg I presume when NASA needs to do interactive pieces they'll use Javascript &c.

@vid Yes I know WP is hardly a non-JS platform (even before Gutenberg), the point is that it doesn't remotely resemble the current "assumed" way websites are made, yet it has a huge share of all websites.

vid,

@tomw it's basically for making brochures though. Is that a good use of a digital medium? I guess it got colour before that became widespread for faxing.

@vid If by brochures you mean "working websites containing text", unlike non-functional SPA attempts at the same

vid,

@tomw I guess I haven't seen that many non-functional sites, despite widespread use of the web.
