@loren I hear you like birds? Did you know that New Zealand’s Bird of the Year competition this year is also Bird of the Century?!!! Alas they don’t seem to have much presence on Mastodon but nonetheless it’s a really fun set of campaigns in Instagram. I am partial to the Titipounamu (Rifleman), New Zealand’s smallest bundle of green fury
The Swift parrots fly in from Tasmania, to feed on flowering eucalyptus trees in the Grey Box Forests of Victoria. They are critically endangered (i.e. the step before becoming extinct), with only 300 estimated to be left!
Habitat loss is the driving factor in their decline and every bit of habitat counts towards their survival. Swift parrots have been recorded in the 136.57 hectares of Grey Box Woodland at the airport and Melbourne Airport has identified this species as one that will be impacted by the 3rd runway. This woodland, protected under the EPBC Act, will be completely removed for the third runway.
