This sparrow has a cinnamon colored mohawk, a grey face, chest and belly and brown, white and black wings. It's a chipping sparrow.
This male pileated woodpecker, with its bright red crest and mustache and black wings, poses on a branch.
This is the reddest house finch I have ever seen. He must be in great demand by the ladies.

This Neil Armstrong of birds (or perhaps, Avian Amelia Earhart?) crossed the Rocky Mountains solo, the first Field Sparrow to be spotted in California many years, a humble-looking but intrepid half-ounce explorer far from its usual habitat. A single 2-minute sighting in Griffith Park drew birders from near and far trying to see it again, so far to no avail.

The remarkably handsome Chipping Sparrow was the New World Number One Sparrow Champion until house sparrows invaded from Europe and pushed them to the margins.

We have an area in our local park where, in the winter, people dump seeds for the birds. It's called, somewhat predictably, The Seed Pile. I made a visit today and here's what I saw. #birds #birding #birdphotography #birdsofmastodon #nature #HoosierMast #sparrow #cardinal #grackle #blackbird

This female cardinal was much bolder than the males, sitting out in the sun and eating sunflower seeds.
This big birds, with its yellow eyes, iridescent blue head, shiny black body and long black tail is a common grackle.
This bird has a shiny black body with red and yellow epaulets on its wings. Its song is the song of spring and summer. They migrate earlier than the females in order to establish their territories. This is a male red winged blackbird.
