It's kind of fun™️ how apps generally can only serve as receivers, and apps generally can only serve as UP distributors

being a UP receiver is... not happening anytime soon: https://pleroma.tbqdrn.de/objects/7f974a38-ac35-4f80-b10b-c00d704e2842 . Funnily enough, FCM Push is supported by Conversations. I guess the opportunity to reverse roles changed something.

That said, given that chat apps are already keeping persistent connections, Matrix apps not being a distributor is a missed opportunity.

Recommendations, please, for making an audio/video call work between:

  • a user on iOS and a user on Android

  • a user on iOS and a user on Linux

Messaging works fine, as does a/v between Linux and Android, but I have yet to find a combination which works for audio / video with an iOS device in the mix.

@neil if you self host (or not), works quite well, which is based on IM on and on . On GNU/Linux, is working, otherwise and should work (web clients). I believe they all work between themselves (for one2one calls).

Be sure to have an XMPP server with STUN/TURN activated (it's precious to cross NAT/Firewalls).

For the record, I'm implementing A/V calls in too, thanks to an grant.

Messenger-Apps 2023 so:

  • Element/Riot sind Polizei und andere Behörden als Kunden deutlich wichtiger als Einzelpersonen (und auch sonst prima Arschloch-Verhalten)

  • Signal ist kein SMS-Client mehr

  • meine bezahlte Threema-Version kann ich noch immer nicht legal auf meinem Google-freien Telefon installieren

…und // funktioniert weiterhin einfach problemlos und unaufgeregt.

Klar hab ich da 1-2x ordentlich Aufwand investiert! Aber die Familie ist im MUC erreichbar!
