Started playing around with and cheap sensors and smart powerplugs (and some , also got some sensors I haven't unpacked yet).

It's been a steep learning curve but it's cool that most of the stuff just works (TP-Link and , Zigbee, (using the Hue Bridge, not directly connected to my Zigbee coordinator). Some stuff this uses the cloud (but can be used locally), other stuff takes out the cloud entirely. (1/2)

Temperature per room
Power usage from Zigbee and ESPhome/WiFi smart plugs.
PIR and door sensor tests (Zigbee)

After a long time without posting, I thought it was about time to get back to sharing some work. I know, insects do not really need solar power and wifi, but as a good landlord to them, I thought it was a good idea. Jokes aside, there is a BME280 and an 18650 battery wired to an ESP32 inside to help me get better weather data. and made it a real breeze after all the soldering. In the end, I am really happy with the result. Is this ?

I've now collected 4 of the 5 stones needed to complete the #smarthome protocol infinity gauntlet after deploying an #ESPHome device (#ratgdo) for the first time last night.

Once completed, I'll be able to decrease my home's electricity usage by 50% at the snap of my fingers.

The only question - what's the fifth stone???

  1. MQTT
  2. Zigbee
  3. Z-Wave
  4. ESPHome
  5. ???

So I bought a bunch of stuff to build an display based off an board, sort of mixing and matching stuff up from a few project I had found.

I had assumed that the hardware would be supported by , but the amount of stuff that especially me actually supports is... Disappointingly low.

So, besides learning how esphome works, I now get to figure out how to add a 3rd party library in there and how to write a panel description so it can drive it.

Fun times ahead, not.

Further adventures with and show that a Dallas 1-wire temperature sensor can be wired up via a 4K7 and it just works! Greenhouse temperature now monitored, option to send "It's bloody cold out here you know" messages enabled. NZ-compliant wifi socket for the heater on order...

@vik you might also see if you can use a BLE device to measure temperature over . That should satisfy your hope of running a long time off a single CR2032 battery.

Configured an device up with two buttons on it, and an 18650 battery. Battery doesn't last overnight, which is a bit disappointing. I need something I can stick on a wall that runs forever off a CR2032 (used to have those with the ancient X10 system).

It's surprisingly stable, no hangups in several days.

Homemade offgrid solar system is stable enough these days. All code running on a cheap ESP32. I use only for charting.

It’s a bit out of proportion but the ESP32 (and voltage sensors) use a dedicated 7A battery. Having it depend on variations of the main 70ah batteries could be too unstable and cause lock ups on high energy load / drain changes.

Bedroom inverter maintains battery charged to be there in case of power cuts, office inverter empties stored energy.

The logs from the ESPHome device show that it has the sensor value. When I try to write it out to my e-ink screen, I get NaN, or garbage in the case of a text sensor.
This is, as you might say, frustrating.

My garage door opener is dying; the worm gear is making irregular clunking noises. While I don't currently use home automation, I'd hate to accidentally rule out Home Assistant. What are the brands that currently support local control?

@mcdanlj buy an #OpenGarage and flash #ESPHome onto it.

Quick + easy (USB serial interface for flashing). Guaranteed to work with the newer S2 openers too, just buy the "adapter" (relay is a garage remote).

Dear @esphome @esphome community, what are your thoughts on ESP boards with an Ethernet port for making devices?

For example, if building a new house, would you recommend to have smart wall plugs with an ESP with an Ethernet port? I'd like to be able to turn it on, off and to monitor power, current, voltage and temperature. What board and Ethernet module to get? I believe such a board is configurable via .

@nikhil Oh these support Matter now ? That’s cool. I usually reflash them with either #Tasmota or #ESPHOME but I am curious how well it’ll work with Matter. I don’t have any Matter item at the moment.

Edit: technically Apple stuff are Matter bridges (recent Apple TV & HomePod minis).

So I just got my ESP32-S3-Box-3, flashed it with #ESPHome #voiceassistant for #homeassistant , set up the pipeline with #NabuCasa cloud and the results were.. not great. When it works, it's fine. But it's way too crashy at the moment to be usable unfortunately.

Nothing showing up in the device logs. I added a heartbeat logger just to prove the device itself wasn't crashing. It often completes a task, then sits there with the "speaking house" image on the screen and doesn't accept a subsequent command. I need to reboot it. Any tips, folks?

@tweedge Specifically I wish all smart appliances came with an ESP32 and a breakout board like that receiving all sensors. It’s so pleasant to just be able to crimp a clean terminator on a wire and screw/unscrew there.

Much less annoying than soldering when you just want to add / replace a sensor on the board in place. Now using these in all stuff (unless space is an issue).

First part of a new long term home project coming in. An PoE+ switch to power a small cluster built using nodes. Going to blog about every step once it has been completed. But it is going to be a few quarters long project doing bit by bit

So instead I went with this tower, we have the same one downstairs powering the living room display. Plenty of space and nothing will block each other. Plus it comes with 4 powers we will utilize for (more) lego display lights and planned sensors on the stairs to the home office. Just need to pick and time and date as doing this will take that entire switch down, and create a network split between two and one control plane nodes.

Power tower on the floor under the moc powered and ready to be switched to
