Another recent #invertebrate print for #InverteFest: my #linocut hummingbird clearwing moth (Hermaris thysbe) seeking pollen from cherry blossoms! The olive-headed burgundy moth has transparent wings (though colour can be variable). It beats its wings rapidly to hover above flowers, like a hummingbird, meaning it is often confused with a hummingbird or bee.
This year I've been doing a lot of mothing, and I found quite a few emerald moths - always a treat. Here's one of my favorite emerald moth pics from this year. #InverteFest#mothtodon
It’s been a while, but going to be doing more than just cat photos again (Thanks #Idalia for making me miss #Invertefest 🤬). The Stained Glass #Moth, #Samea castellasis.
For #SciArtSeptember day 2: battle, it’s my linocut of 2 dangerous invasive beauties & the battle against their spread in eastern North America, the spotted lanternfly & tree of heaven. The Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altimissa) is a deciduous tree native to NE China & Taiwan, which was foolishly brought to Europe & NA in the 1700s where it as become known as a noxious weed & invasive plant. 🧵1/n #linocut#printmaking#sciart#entomology#botany#spottedLanternfly#insect#ailanthus#InverteFest
Hooray for #invertefest! I may not post on all the days (Thanks Idalia) but I bring the Florida Grass Mantis, #Thesprotia graminis a very stylish little #mantid found in the North American Southeast. Marked as sensitive due to insects
It’s almost time for another #Invertefest (August 28-September 3)and in anticipatory celebration I present one of my favorite inverts, the Four-spotted #Mantidfly, #Dicromantispa interrupta. Images marked sensitive due to insect content.
Early alert. #InverteFest , organized by @franzanth is coming from 28 Aug - 3 Sept 2023. Share your photos of invertebrates during that period with the hashtag.
Only have pictures of your pet snail? That's fine, just post it during that time period. 🙂
My last entry for this #invertefest is this #fly that Inaturalist’s system thinks might be genus #Leia but I have had no IDs on. The coloration is similar to that of a lovebug (Plecia nearctica) but it is nearly twice the length.
Ah, and because this is also possibly relevant to #InverteFest, c&p of a toot f mine from a few days ago:
I am becoming a bit frustrated with the lack of resources about drawing animals other than mammals or birds. Can anyone here recommend anything that goes further than just the normal Dynamic Sketching classes? Books, websites, videos, anything?
Paper versions of Hopkin’s rose nudibranch, purple and Sputnik urchin as well as a California freshwater shrimp. Each contain gifts to unwrap. #InverteFest#nudibranch#marine
The larvae are exceptionally shy of light. Studies by the Page Institute for Global Lignine Research show: Imagines are extremely rare, they only develop with adequate reading. Feeding alternative: #Brain#orchids.
I picked-up three empty potter wasp nests and left them there, waiting for better light to photograph them. But it rained and the mud dissolved. I kind of like the result.
days 39-40 of my #100DaysChallenge of drawing animals. I continued working on some watercolors and more intentionally to be finished stuff - with the result that except for the elephants that were actually finished at this point, the rest is still languishing in my room in the same state like, 2 weeks or so later. Gah. I hope I'll have the energy to actually finish them this week!
interrupting my usual (attempt at a) strictly chronological order of posting drawings because #InverteFest is still going on so the Vertebrae have to take a backseat for now. Instead I present to you these charming lil #spiders, which were days 79 & 80 of drawing animals respectively :)
