I’m in the Norwegian woods;
reading ‘Norwegian Wood’.
So, of course (?) I played the Beatles’ song on a lark and now can’t stop thinking about the Droster effect.

Curiosity peaked by ’s line on page 330:

“… life is a box of chocolates.”

Googling rabbit hole:

Norwegian Wood was published in 1987, years before the movie Forrest Gump (1994) written by Eric Roth.

And while the screenplay for Gump was based on Winston Goom’s 1986 novel, his line was actually : “Being an idiot is no box of chocolates.”

Book 12, 2024: Novelist as Vocation - Haruki Murakami. I used to read Murakami a lot but sort of lost interest along the way. I picked up this in a bookshop’s closing-down sale, and quite liked it. It collects essays about being a writer, some earlier ones of which were printed in a Japanese magazine. The more recently written articles resonated with me more (fewer exclamation marks, for one thing), especially the essay about being physically in shape as a writer, and one about how he targeted success in the US. @bookstodon

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great (albeit short) memoir, full of introspection and interesting thoughts on running.

This is the book I wanted to read and didn't know. It's an awesome read about running, writing, and the author's own mind. I found myself nodding in agreement to him too many times, thinking "damn, this guy gets me". Pretty inspiring as well.

I haven't read any of Murakami's books yet, but after this, I'll really have to!

Well, I ended up ordering through these three hardcover editions of Murakami.

I'm a sucker for beautifully designed covers. It's the reason I have so many duplicates on my bookshelf. 😅
