Wes Streeting: Cultural rot means NHS puts itself before the public

NO. If you means some managers in a ‘reformed system’, instigated by the Tories and pushed hard by Labour maybe. What will increased privatisation do?

You can always rely on Sneering Streeting to undermine the NHS with a vacuous sound bite. That’s how he’ll manage his brief in England.

He takes bribes, which I refuse to call contributions, from health businesses.

Is the answer to 'dental deserts' to force newly trained dentists to work for the NHS for the first years of their career (or to pay back the costs of their training)?

Well, unless Labour adopt such an approach we may never know, but the crisis in NHS dentistry might be alleviated by some form of national service requirement from dentists (alongside a better funding model!)?.

It may not be the best answer, but these are desperate times in dentistry.

@ChrisMayLA6 They need a practice still tied to NHS. It's whole practices leaving . And this company is much to blame as they are buying practices and taking them private https://www.todaysdental.co.uk/

Completely private dentistry is the ultimate goal of the tory filth.

The current contract for NHS dentists is a joke and it is not surprising that dentists are fleeing in their thousands.

The only way you can run a healthcare system that includes dentistry is on a "pay per item of treatment" basis. This is what all our European neighbours do and it works well and this is the way UK NHS dentistry was organised when the NHS was founded.

There was an organisation called the Dental Estimates Board (later name changed to the Dental Practice Board) in Eastbourne that processed the claims for payment by dentists in England and Wales. This employed over 2000 people at its height, making it Eastbourne's largest employer, however computerisation substantially reduced the numbers needed to process claims for payment.

Scan went smoothly and the #nhs radiographers were lovely as always. Will be around a week before I hear what the results were, and seeing my consultant in a fortnight :)

If you want to smoulder with rage and righteous indignation, by all means watch the live coverage of the #InfectedBloodInquiry and its findings.

"Victims cruelly told they had best treatment."

Gross negligence on a hideous scale, and yes, multiple governments helped bring this disaster about too.

Over 30,000 people infected. Over 3,000 already dead.

He can shake the magic reform tree all he likes, but the "efficiencies" he's after can't be achieved without spending money. Want to free up bed space? Fund social care properly. Want more homegrown doctors and nurses? Give universities the money to train them (and stop overworking existing staff to the point of quitting) #NHS #UKPolitics

Election campaigning is in full swing. And #Hunt is busy trying to get credit for ‘solutions’ to the #Blood Scandal. Of course as Health minster he contributed to the destruction of the #NHS (his family are heavily involved in private healthcare) and will in due course tell us how he saved it. So, the theory being put forward by #ReformUK is a 20% tax relief on all private healthcare and insurance. The inference being that if more people take up private healthcare, there will be less demand on the #nhs. Sounds logical, right? The only problem is that we all know what will happen. If demand falls, so will the funding. Another "innovative?" idea is: "𝘊𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘣𝘺 𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘜𝘒 & 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴." so basically shipping our sick and injured to another country. #politics

dick_turpin,

In 2019, the Conservatives promised 40 new hospitals by 2030. So far, two have been completed, and five are still under construction. There are currently 124,000 job vacancies in the #nhs. The problem isn't money; our national health system is failing because it lacks the capacity to cater to an exploding population and because nobody wants to work in healthcare.

It takes a special kind of dedication to want to nurse sick and injured people, so while yes, healthcare workers should be paid a decent wage, offering huge salaries doesn't necessarily mean the vacancies will be filled overnight.

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@dick_turpin My theory is the problem is coffee shops combined with the minimum wage; why spend your day dealing with puke and puss when you can serve coffee?
The answer is to roboticise the coffee shops!

UK public voice fear over security in NHS data systems

https://www.theregister.com/2024/05/13/uk_public_nhs_data_survey/

Leaving aside the fact that (as always UK is synonymous with England and hence the whole of Britain), who is surprised. With c ompanies such as Palentir involved, and no doubts brown paper envelopes to senior managers and a Westminster government ruling the roost it is inevitable.

The NHS is great but it has limits: yesterday was the first time I've ever heard a GP drop their official demeanour to let their anger at a lack-of-resource situation show.

My local area has very limited provision for mental health services related to Autism or ADHD; he got angry that they were failing patients, having to tell them to go private. (Meaning me in this instance, and another two people last week).

#NHS #UK

Uraael,

I'm angry too.

I have a suspected diagnosis of ADD (My GP didn't think I had the Hyperactivity component) and I'm now left to pursue diagnosis and treatment/management through costly private services and self-directed care.

Good job I didn't go to them with a problem with task-accomplishment, or anything. :blobcat_angery:

Uraael, (edited )

Hard not to feel a bit abandonded. Unsupported. Very reminiscent of me going to them with my Tinnitus where the best advice they had was "try not to listen to it".

These days I don't go to them unless I really need to so to be let down yet again is a bitterer pill than it would be otherwise.

Thanks for nothing, folks.
