"I know you love playing with your computer," she said, leaning on his shoulder, "but I need to tell you the house is on fire."

"Okay…" Pat typed a few more words, then looked at her, shock on his face. "You said what?"

"Good, now I have your attention, I can tell you I'm off for a job interview," Jody said, hugging him.

"We should go swimming too," Jeff said, tapping his sister on the shoulder. "Unless you're afraid of water."

Carla looked at him. "Ha. In case you forgot, I was around to invent swimming in a previous life. Let's go. Be nice and I might save you if you start drowning."

The two walked off.

"Aren't they adorable?" Mary-Beth asked, pretending to look desperate.

"What's that previous life stuff your daughter talked about," Corey asked.

"She's doing a paper on reincarnation," Bill explained, "and now everything's blamed on past lives."

Emran said nothing. The color of his cheeks spoke for him.

"Hey, easy there. I'm not looking forward to being a dead vampire, you know."

"Don't worry," Inga said, failing to assure him by swerving around a few cyclists between those two words. "You're too precious to us."

"And you sound like Gollem from Lord of the Rings."

Harvey frowned for a moment. He liked how she stepped up for him, but at the same time her words made it sound like he was a wimp. He might be, but that wasn't for all the world to know.

Leander switched out his long duster, pulling on a worn pea coat and a shapeless woolen hat, turning himself from the tough P.I. into an average working man. With practiced ease, he fell into the slouching posture of a tired worker on his way home, carrying a satchel with the newspaper, his empty lunchbox and the bottle of milk. That was who his neighbors knew, that was who his family saw.
And that was exactly the way he wanted it.

Nobody was inclined to talk much. Alex gave a growl or two, and I assumed that Luka had tried to touch him once again.

“Your dog doesn’t like me,” he eventually said.

“No," I answered simply, and Alex huffed.

“I like dogs,” Luka went on, sounding a little miffed.

“This is not your average dog,” I said, doing my best to hide my smile. Luka had no idea, and I wouldn’t enlighten him just yet.

These goons had killed Mark. I had to face that brutal fact, because Luka had admitted that those were their orders.

The rage I felt at that thought was frightening. Right now, I was ready to tear out their throats with my bare hands. If they had killed Mark, they did not deserve to live. And I would find [villain] next and do the same to him.

“Alex weiß Bescheid,” Luka said, sounding upset.

“Du Idiot! Was ist passiert?”

“Es müssen diese verdammten Amerikaner sein, die gerade zu Besuch sind.”

Ah, so we were getting the blame for Alex finding out about [spoiler]. Well, Luka wasn’t wrong. I grinned to myself.

William asked if the young men were marriage material.

"They are," Isla confirmed, "but I'm not. Not for them. I tried to tell them, before they turned into a stampede, but they didn't listen. So I made them understand the witchy way."

"Perhaps you should start doing things the queenly way, Isla," the wizard said. "It's not looking good for the kingd-, I mean queendom when you're known as the queen who beats up people."

I grinned back at him, as well as a Wolf could.

Alex actually laughed. “I can’t wait to see how I’ll look. I don’t know if I want to be a big black wolf or more like you so I can fit in and figure out secrets.”

“Trust me, looking like Fred does make it a lot easier.” Mark somehow looked proud. Why would he…?

“You get the window, I go upstairs,” Fred yelled, and I ran through the kitchen and out of the back door.

Yes, the kid was already climbing out of his room’s window.

I watched him hang on to the windowsill with his hands, dangling quite comfortably before letting go and landing on the ground with a thump. He bent at his knees, and it was clear to me this wasn’t the first time he had done it.

It was Reena.

I stayed back in the shadows of the garage, hiding behind one of the cars, not entirely sure what I was seeing. But the woman talking to Bert moved in ways that were so achingly familiar. I wanted to walk up to her, take a deep breath, testing her scent, but of course, that would not happen.

Could not happen.

“What else do you get when you go Wolf?” he asked. “Like… superpowers?”

Mark laughed. “We get a little of that, yes. We’re stronger, we heal faster. But we also need to eat more.”

“Makes sense,” Alex muttered, still looking excited. “Can I try?”

Alex came down the stairs, sounding like a herd of elephants. What was up now?

“Wir treffen uns gleich…” Alex rolled his eyes at his mother’s hiss. “Luka wants to meet at the town hall in an hour,” he went on. “I want to go.”

“Food first. And Mark and Fred need to talk to you. He can wait for you.”

“But Mama…” Yes, that was the classical teenager whine.

I woke up in the dark, not sure what had disturbed my sleep. I listened sharply, glad my Wolf gave me stronger senses. There it was. Steps in the hallway, coming up to our door.

I tensed.

The steps moved away again.

Whoever it was turned around and walked up to our door again, but didn’t stop. Someone was pacing the hallway, and not in a good way.

There was one bed in the room.

Granted, it was big enough for two, but… only one bed.

In a romance novel, that would have been cute. Here, with Fred walking into the room after me, it wasn’t.

“Oh,” Fred said faintly. “I was afraid of that.”

Aunt Maria was good at picking up voice cues, it seemed. “Is something wrong?”

“Mark spricht kein Deutsch,” Aunt Maria explained.

“We’ll manage,” I reassured them. “If you speak German slowly, I can understand you. And we’ll both speak English slowly and with simple words. Right?” I glared at Mark.

“Simple words,” he repeated. “I can do that. I can do that even better with beer.”

Mark seemed to struggle more with the noise and crowding on the airplane than I did, and I felt a little guilty for dragging him along with me. He also took one sniff at what went for dinner with this airline and paled.

“That… they think this is food?”

Only that Randall wasn’t an innocent beholder.

With grim determination, Earth threw up a bubble, wrapping all of them in as tight a shield as she could manage. She anchored it in the ground, reaching down to firm rock.

“Gennie, if you have any energy to spare, help hold that bubble, please.”

“Of course, Momma Earth.”

She could sense the girl’s smile, and somehow, that gave her hope.
