1850s Townhouses on Cecil Street in the West End of Glasgow. Thought to be designed by J.T. Rochead, anyone who was a student at Glasgow University in the 1980s and the early 1990s will most likely remember them as a row of rundown, seedy bedsits with as many people crammed into them as possible.

11 and 13 University Gardens in the West End of Glasgow. Designed by John James Burnet in a Classical style and built in 1882, they're all that's left of a terrace of similar buildings which once lined this side of the street. Originally private houses, they're now part of Glasgow University.

Townhouses on University Gardens in the West End of Glasgow. The corner building was designed by Robert Ewan in 1902, while much of the rest of the terrace was designed by J.J. Burnet in the 1880s.

The wonderfully grand and imposing James Watt North Building of Glasgow University. Designed by J.J. Burnet, it's a mix of Renaissance and Scots Baronial styles and was built in the early 1900s.

I've been in and out of Glasgow University's Graham Kerr Building, home to what was the Zoology Department when I was an undergrad, many times over the last 30 years, but it was only yesterday that I noticed this wonderful little detail of a snake on the handles of the outermost doors.

The Queen Margaret Union, Glasgow University's second student union. While not as architecturally grand as the Glasgow University Union featured in the previous post, it's the home to much of the alternative side of student life. It's also a key part of Glasgow's music scene, and over the years it has hosted a wealth of famous bands, including Queen, The Smiths, Nirvana, The Ramones, Coldplay and Franz Ferdinand.

This memorial in Glasgow's Necropolis marks the re-burial site of the remains of Glasgow University professors and their families which were originally interred in the nearby Blackfriars Churchyard.

This church once stood on the eastern side of the High Street and could trace its origins back to 1246. In 1573, it became a possession of Glasgow University, which, at that time, was also based on High Street.

Westdel on Queen's Place in the Hyndland area of Glasgow. Designed by George Washington Browne, it was originally built in 1890 for Robert MacLehose, who ran the Glasgow University Press and whose initials are inscribed on its date plaque in the bottom left corner of the photo. At one time it had a bedroom designed by Charles Rennie MacKintosh, but this is now in the University's collections.

Rather surprisingly, this one of the oldest building on Glasgow University's Gilmorehill Campus in the West End of the City. Built in 1828, some forty years before the University moved to its currenty location, Florentine House was amongst the first villas to be built in the Hillhead area of Glasgow. It was purchased by the University in 1981 and is now home to its College of Social Sciences.

While the main buildings of Glasgow University, designed by George Gilbert Scott in the 1860s, are generally described as Gothic in style, they also have a range of features more commonly associated with the Scots Baronial style, such as Crow-Stepped Gables and Pepperpot Turrets.

I love the way a tower of bay windows is used to turn this terrace of townhouses around a bend in University Gardens in the West End of Glasgow. This terrace was primarily designed by J.J. Burnet and dates from the 1880s.

Glasgow University's gloriously Gothic Gilbert Scott building, which opened in 1870, is now not only one of the architectural gems of the city's West End, but also its most notable feature, with its tall, distinctive tower being visible throughout the area. However, the choice of this style for the centrepiece of the new university campus had at least one major detractor and if he'd got his way, we'd now be looking at a very different skyline.

This detractor was none other than Glasgow's own Alexander 'Greek' Thomson. Thomson, perhaps unsurprisingly given his nickname, thought a Classical style was much more appropriate for a centre of learning, and during the planning stages he gave not one, but two talks to the Glasgow Architectural Society on the subject.

The first, in 1864, was a more general, but still rather pointed talk titled 'The Unsuitableness of Gothic Architecture to Modern Requirements', while the second in 1866 titled ‘An Inquiry as to the Appropriateness of the Gothic Style for the proposed Buildings for the University of Glasgow, with some remarks upon Mr. Scott’s plans’ was more specifically aimed at Gilbert Scott's intended design.
