Oddly enough I was fiddling around with backups on its server last night. I don't even want to say which version of and its running 😬

I remember when strike through with LJ happened as I'm very sure @anildash does as well.

Because Livejournals code was open we had several network splits.

We had LJ, insane journal, journalfen and Dreamwidth.

Open ID even meant we could post comments on these communities and people's journals.

I have a feeling that there's a lot of former LJ folks on here, who were in fandom.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@onepict @anildash I wasn't in fandom on LJ, was in the community, which thrived there in the early aughts.

While people have survived and found friends again after the split, it wasn't a good time. It was the same, probably worse really, with G+.

Interestingly have found some people from both spaces have migrated to Fedi, but it's still hard to find folk, and many who were on LJ in quite tight knit communities that I speak to in other places (Discord, Signal) still have the opinion that Fedi isn't worth their time as their networks are not here (yet). The fragmentation was deeply damaging, most people just went to Facebook, and even now, far too many can't see the importance of Federation to our social health and safety.

I feel the only way things will truly change is for legal intervention, which is coming to the EU, and why Threads, I think, was built, in anticipation of this legal hurdle for monopolist players.

Many, many people have asked about error messages when using mastodon.social.

Mastodon.social is far too large. Its massive size causes errors, and threatens the long term safety of the whole Fediverse.

I strongly encourage people on mastodon.social to move their account to another server.

You can find reliable servers on the official site at https://joinmastodon.org/servers or my own recommended list at https://fedi.garden

Here's a step-by-step guide for moving: https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server/

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@feditips @bitflipped yes, aware of all these things. You can't migrate anything and guarantee the links will update, beyond a certain point, and have already been playing around with the WordPress ActivityPub plugin, but it's not playing nice with my shared hosting so waiting to see if that kind of issue gets resolved eventually. Importing posts from one site to another will always be a copy, for me it would be incredibly valuable to have that long timeline even with issues. Back in the days this issue was discussed and dealt with in various ways by LJ clones.

The current state of reminds of before the end. A series of bad business decisions leading to account after account going dark, connections scattering to different platforms, many never to be heard from again, or just going dormant as people find something else as a focus, leaving behind a weird sense of hollow loss. I still have my old lj account and occasionally post to it, but nobody ever comments any more. That is where is taking the old service now.

It's my 23rd anniversary on . Unfortunately, I got no one left on LJ to share it with, since everyone's left and the place is drowning in ads. So I'll just share it here.

I haven't posted there in years, but those were the best pre-social media days.

Wow! Linking to someone who rhymes with Flott Banselman apparently gets you noticed (looks at the 40+ notifications).

To jump off that point, is important, even if you think you don't have anything novel to say. You do, actually: because you are you, and no one else, so your words are novel by definition.

I've abandoned stuff I put on , exported stuff from and , and anything I make from here on out is only on my own server/domain.

How about if we take some time off from talking about Threads (TM) the Instagram/Facebook/Meta App, and instead talk about the best for displaying and building a conversation on the internet?

dynamic,

In principle, it should be relatively straightforward to create a Mastodon / ActivityPub client that would organize threads in a manner more similar to / / Euphoria (https://euphoria.io/room/welcome/), but building something like that would present new problems because views of thread / conversation structure would differ by client.

Was deeply engaged in a difficult conversation today when a book caught my attention across the room. “Is that Unmasking Autism? I read that earlier this year.” It was an optional opening for optional disclosure. It changed the questions he felt comfortable asking, changed how I provided education, and it ended be a deeply satisfying and helpful exchange. Today was a real win. @bookstodon

@geographile @Grizzlysgrowls @axnxcamr @addie @actuallyautistic @bookstodon @audhd I’d like a book chain like that. It reminds me of a Live Journal project from decades ago where art journals were shipped across country and each person created a page before shipping it on to the next person.

Are there clients already that let you hide all the boosts and/or replies from the feed? I don't see how people don't see that having that all visible is incompatible with chronological feeds. Or, I don't know, limiting one person boosts to 2 a day. I used to be able to comfortably read a feed of 150 people in , people didn't repost that often there and the slogan 'make original content!' meant "post your images and not work of others".
Mostly have to read from the browser.

This weekend I was part of a great discussion about platform migration in #fandom. What's happening now with #TwitterMigration (and all types of online communities!) has both some similarities and differences. But if you're interested in one example of these kinds of migrations (e.g. #usenet to #livejournal to #tumblr and #ao3 in #fanfiction communities) here's my video essay about this research! https://youtu.be/xzQO-vkX3q0
