Beware of Products in . If you have a choice, don't buy them! The App refuses to populate the WiFi Network to pair new devices if you do not deactivate 'Private WiFi Address' (MAC randomisation), 'Limit IP Address Tracking' & activate 'Location Services' and give access to 'Precise Location' on iPhone. . They even published a blog article about it, recommending to deactivate these vital protections, instead of fixing the App. 🤦

one good thing though - the #SONOFF RF-to-WiFi Bridge (R2 433) does work with other 3rd party Sensors and I now managed to integrate my Alarm System into #HomeAssistant , without having to buy a new one.

Can anyone help? I’m looking for something that electrically behaves like a regular wall wart - 120Vac (I’m in the US) input, and 5V USB-A female output.

But, rather than it plugging into a receptacle, I want screw terminals for the AC input, similar to a bunch of the devices - Basic, Mini, etc.

I have a bunch of places where I have AC wires available but need to power an ESP device. Wiring in a receptacle just for a single wall wart seems excessive.

On ZHA with the Nabu Casa SkyConnect, I would have had to reset it twice by now.

I did an experiment - removing routers to test performance of Sonoff ZBDongle-E.

I kept only:

  • ZBDongle-E as a coordinator,
  • ZBDongle-E as a router,
  • Gledopto LED strip controller, because I use it.

Zigbee network has been rock solid stable in above setup with over 20 battery powered end devices for past few days

Aeotec Zi-Stick ZGA008 had a problem maintaining links in such setup - without adding extra routers.

@zigbee

Aeotec Zi-Stick ZGA008 as a coordinator with many battery powered devices. This coordinator needs more than just one extra dedicated router besides LED strip controller acting as a router. With less routers, battery powered devices are randomly losing link and start flying the map. Even if router without any links is removed, network becomes unstable.

Sonoff ZBDongle-E is quite capable Zigbee stick.

It has been working great as a router for few weeks, so I've decided to set it up as a coordinator, and migrate the whole network to it.

It seems to work reliably as a coordinator so far. Using it with Zigbee2MQTT in Home Assistant.

I wrote a mini review for it - https://kravemir.org/product-reviews/sonoff-zbdongle-e.

Irgendwie bekomme ich den ConBee III nicht sauber an den HomeAssistant.
Oder der Scan findet keine Zigbee Devices.
Irgendwas ist ja immer. 🥴

Dieses deconz verliert aller Nase die Verbindung.

Also doch einen anderen Stick?

I’ve bought some #Ikea #Vallhorn motion sensors for 8€ a piece.

Pairing to the #Zigbee network in Home Assistant and #Zigbee2MQTT was somehow difficult, which is not usual for Zigbee devices (at least according to my limited experiences with them). Nevertheless, I succeeded in pairing them.

Unsuccessful attempts

Firstly I tried to pair the sensor with ‘Permit All’ for several times. Pairing failed. I noticed the sensor wanted to connect to my #Aqara smart plug (SP-EUC01), not to the #Sonoff Zigbee stick (the coordinator). Somehow Aqara didn’t like it and rejected the initial Zigbee ‘interview’.

zigbee2mqtt error message - couldn't pairSuccessful attempt

After some tries finally the following method for pairing worked:

  1. Zigbee2MQTT: Permit Coordinator (forcing to join the Sonoff Zigbee Stick).
  2. Pressed the link button shortly 4 times (in 5 seconds). The red diode started to blink (fading) fast and then slowly.
  3. Placed the sensor a few (2) cm near the coordinator.

Ikea Vallhorn motion sensor and Sonoff Zigbee coordinatorThe initial step (‘zigbee dialogue’) was completed successfully this time and I was able to add them to the dashboards, automations etc.

Overall, the design of the sensor looks nice and smooth. On the backside, it has 3 buttons:

  1. Link – for pairing
  2. Timer (1 – 5) – probably to notify connected lights when to turn off (after 1 or 5 minutes). Not sure if this function works or even makes sense in Home Assistant.
  3. Light mode – to notify connected lights when to turn on/off (always, only at night). Again, this function is probably useful if you have an Ikea gateway and lights and not in the Home Assistant

Ikea Vallhorn with holderThe package also includes a holder and a piece of double-sided tape. The manual doesn’t include much information.

Automations

Why I bought this motion sensor at all? The initial idea was to turn on the Home Assistant dashboard (FireHD tablet) when someone approaches the fridge with the tablet attached.

The automation is simple:

If a motion is detected, then send a notification (‘command_screen_on’) to the tablet (running the #HomeAssistant companion app):

Home Assistant automation - turning on the screenThe automation works ok-ish.

Motion sensor log in Home AssistantIt detects motion and turns on the tablet, but the tablet screen turns off after a minute. I’ve noticed the sensor doesn’t send triggers every time it detects motion, only at the beginning of the motion and after the state is cleared (no motion detected). The states are:

Detected -> Cleared -> Detected -> Cleared … and so on

The effect: if someone is dancing in front of the sensor for several minutes, it will trigger only one time. Meanwhile, the associated automation will not be triggered again.

What I want (from the state perspective) is:

Detected -> Detected -> Detected -> …. Cleared -> Detected ….

I could prolong the screen on time, but that is not the best solution. I have to think about how to solve this issue. Maybe other types of motion sensors behave the way I want?

Ideas for other 2 motion sensors

Ok, this was the first motion sensor I put in use.

The second sensor I’ve put in my workshop to detect motion. I’d like to build a simple home alarm system. A few days ago I thought I heard someone opening doors and walking in my workshop. When I checked, nobody was there, but the unpleasant feeling stayed. So the purpose of the second sensor is to prove if I’m hallucinating and hearing voices or not 🙂

For the 3rd one, I don’t have an idea yet where to put it.

Finally, I got around to setting up our new with . The new HomeAssistant Energy dashboard provides a far better display of the metrics and surprisingly also a higher refresh rate, being in perfect sync with the inverter's onboard display, where the inverter's app has a 3 minute delay.

I also set up other fun mwtrics to measure our consumption as well as automation for the extractor fan above the inverter to help keep the enclosed space cool.

The automated switching and monitoring was achieved with sensors and switches.

In today's fun 3D printing adventure and problem solving. We recently installed solar panels and wanted to cool the inverter, which is in a closet sort of thing. We installed an extractor fan controlled by sensors and switches for temperature control.

While mounting the pipe for the fan, the provided mounts didn't work well. So I decided to design and 3D printing 4. The desugn phase was mere minutes, and the entire print took 28 minutes. I'm installing the brackets now.

It's really fun that I can design and print something this fast!

Final design of the bracket. I basically tried to combine and L and Z shape.
Printed all 4 brackets in a single print layer-by-layer

Ugh. I tried to replace my dongle for a one, but botched the process so I broke the Zigbee network and had to rebuild. Luckily I had a backup, so I did not have to re-pair any of my devices, but I lost all the names and locations (funny enough the automations were not affected).

Kids, today's lesson is: backup your configs before making changes. 😄

Installed home assistant on my arch nuc, installed a sonoff zigbee USB gateway, bought 4 zigbee lights (to replace the existing smart lights in my home) and got a zigbee motion sensor.

Integrated the lights (via home assistant) with homekit and google assistant, integrated all smart speakers, and wrote a very quick automation to turn on my living room light when the motion sensor next to my front door is activated.

idk why I waited so long to move to !

Does support sensors connected to a zigbee bridge?

PeteLittle1970, to homeassistant

Question for the Hobbyists and experimenters.

I have one of these Zigbee switch doodads.

I also have a living room light switch that controls one ceiling light and one set of wall uplighters. (2 gang wall switch, Traditional UK style)

Now I know I can get 2 Gang zigbee switches but they look awful (IMHO) and the sonoff switch works with any existing switch.

my question is, I guess I need to shoehorn TWO of these behind the switch , one for each set of lights?

a 2 gang Zigbee switch consisting of 2 round touch buttons on a square background
