Noise update.

History is here: https://mastodon.world/@vsp/109900990999943765

The polite security guard (same one from a year ago) knocked on my door about thirty minutes ago. I had been sleeping on my couch while a movie was playing.

Apparently, the downstairs neighbours called 30 minutes before that, about a noise coming from my unit.

I was, basically, sleeping, no feet touching the ground, and the television was playing low volume Warhammer 40k lore videos (the soft spoken type).

I just got my fixie out of the shop and was able to ride it again. I forgot how much I loved this bike. When I went to pick it up the bike shop guy was like "um did you know one of your tires is off of a wheel chair?"

... I did not... but I guess it was strange that it was gray. I used to get my bike fixed by a guy in the park who worked out of his van BEST prices in the city. ... but yeah, IDK where he got his parts... LMAO

I almost wish I could be a messenger again. It was a life.

I’m really rooting for @stux as they do their big migration today — these things are always stressful, even when they’re well prepared and thought out.

That being said — I’ll be missing the vast amount of mstdn.social caturday posts while the instance is offline XD

(This is a good reminder that most instance admins are doing the work in their spare time… like a weekend)

UPDATE on 216.106.86.232 :

Every few seconds, it's doing the following GETS. I'm getting about 2,000 calls per hour from this IP.

https://hear-me.social/packs/media/images/friends-cropped-40409bf96999902fa49757ebce824ce6.png

https://hear-me.social/api/v1/announcements

https://hear-me.social/api/v1/notifications?exclude_types[]=follow_request&since_id=79462

Is anyone else getting traffic from 216.106.86.232 ?

I will open a report with the ISP

=======================

I'm putting this under #FediBlock because I've noticed that since 12 PM EDT yesterday (30-Apr-2024), API requests coming in from 216.106.86.232 have been returning 500 errors constantly from my server. No other 500 errors were being returned.

I blocked the IP at the Cloudflare firewall and now the 500 errors have stopped. There were more than 93K 500 return codes in total until now!

I have no idea what the requests are, and it's too late at night to do more research, but I'm passing this along to other Admins as a warning and to see if anyone else is seeing similar behavior.

@Gargron

Here's what I see in Cloudflare for the last one hour before blocking the IP address. Notice all the requests returning 500 are from this single IP. There are no page views. It's all API requests. And 500 errors stopped after I blocked it.

Any insights would be appreciated.

@Jerry Did you check your admin panel to see if this is a user of yours?

@Jerry my server is also behind cloudflare and I'm able to get the source IP addresses with the following nginx configuration:

server {
 listen 443 ssl http2;
 listen [::]:443 ssl http2;
 server_name yttrx.com;

 include /etc/nginx/cloudflare;

@Jerry oh gotcha! I didn't realize that you don't track IP addresses; my assistance isn't very helpful in this case lol

I also took the Orange Line train here this morning. Quite retro feeling train and It was pretty empty, but rather cheap.
Main reason to take it was, that there wasn't any footpath available. The distance was totally walkable.

waffles,
@waffles@masto.yttrx.com avatar

@mxk oh nice! It’s not technically the BART and I don’t mean to be a “well actually” reply guy, except I’m still annoyed that the actual BART didn’t make it all of the way between SF & San Jose due to Palo Alto stopping the project because they didn’t want easy access to their community from sf 😭😭😭😭

Why can’t we have nice things!? 🥲

The one reason why I want to learn is so that I could program my computer to copy my social media posts and just stuff them into my Daily Note automatically. Ambitious or impossible? lol

waffles,
@waffles@masto.yttrx.com avatar

@liztai from what i've seen, tools like chatgpt are surprisingly accurate at providing working python based on prompts. It would really accelerate that initial "I know what I want this to do, I just don't know how to express that" frustration that comes with learning a new programming language.

@jrconlin the bootlicking of people trying to justify their grind. I love having a work phone, because I turn it off at the end of the day. My coworkers have never asked me for my personal information and after reading this article, I feel like I’m the exception, not the rule.

waffles,
@waffles@masto.yttrx.com avatar

@jrconlin now that I think about it, I’m a senior but licker myself, because I’m part of an unpaid after hours on call and I’m pretty happy about that.

waffles,
@waffles@masto.yttrx.com avatar

@jrconlin years ago @gnomon and I worked together. The ops team was paid to be on call, and paid per escalation after hours. This incentivized them to not fix problems at the root, because they’d quickly patch issues and collect the overtime. It was awful.

waffles,
@waffles@masto.yttrx.com avatar

@jrconlin @gnomon now I work at a place where all developers support their teams services via on calls. It incentivizes us to fix our shit during the day so that our rotations are smooth. In comparison this is a huge improvement over my previous employer

I'm a big proponent of doing fewer if statements and early returns! Doing stuff in your if statements only increases cognitive load when trying to read the code.

public function sendActivationEmail($user) {
if (! $user->isActivated) {
// Send out activation email
}
}

versus.

public function sendActivationEmail($user) {
if ($user->isActivated) {
return;
}

// Send out activation email

Make sure the ops team feels needed - don’t forget to push your code to production on your way out the door for the weekend.

@jerry my (work) team disables our service's CI on Friday to avoid just this ;)

Monday is always a little exciting when all of those changes start shipping!

Our internal code reviewing tool even has a very passive aggressive popup that reads "you're going to ship this after 11am on a friday???" next to the "land" button lol

I love Fifth Element. I named one of my dogs Leeloo. I have never watched a UHD version.

Definitely a good first choice for this new way of acquiring media.

Right now I’m watching it in the full quality. I’m planning to test out some re-encode settings, though. I might need to use another, far more recent show, though.

waffles,
@waffles@masto.yttrx.com avatar

@bedast lmk how it goes. I haven’t seen it in a decade or so. I’m curious how it holds up to UHD treatment.
