GUARD OLD-GROWTH FORESTS FROM LOGGING

Mature and old-growth are a vital part of a healthy . They fight by storing massive amounts of ; give a home to imperiled like , and ; help support healthy ; and withstand better than young forests.

Sadly, most old-growth forests have been logged. We need to save what's left.

Sink, sank, sunk.
When we ignore #hydrology, infiltration, #soil, & runoff management, we create the conditions for #flooding.
I say, let it be lake & #wetlands again.

@Pollinators Before he died, my friend / colleague Toby Hemenway wrote this wonderful story about (we published it in the magazine, too).
"As Bill Mollison has observed, everything gardens. The beaver, however, goes far beyond simple to feats of complex transformation. Beaver don’t merely build dams that create . They control the flow of vast amounts of energy and material. With tough incisors and instinct, beavers create a shifting mosaic of moist and dry meadows, wet forests, , , streams, and open water that change the climate, nutrient flow, vegetation, wildlife, , and even of entire ." https://tobyhemenway.com/150-the-watershed-wisdom-of-the-beaver/

Widespread Deposition In A Coastal Bay Following Three Major 2017 Hurricanes (Irma, Jose, And Maria) [USVI]

https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-019-43062-4 <-- shared paper

photo - Runoff in the waters near Magens Bay, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, after the passage of Hurricane Irma.
A difference map of Coral Bay, St. John, USVI. The post-storm November 2017 survey was subtracted from the pre-storm August 2017 survey. Deposition is indicated by positive values (green, yellow, orange, red); erosion in negative values (blue). The largest area of deposition (outlined with a black dashed line) is characterized by deposition ranging from 20 to 60 cm. Coral mounds in central Johnson Bay have a general flute mark pattern of deposition toward Coral Harbor and erosion to seaward. Six sediment cores (white circles) were collected in November of 2017.
• Bottom Left: Eastern Puerto Rico and the US and British Virgin Islands with the 2017 hurricane tracks from Category 5 Hurricanes Irma and Maria. St. John, US Virgin Islands sits on a shelf ~60 meters below sea level (This map was generated using NOAA’s U.S. Virgin Islands 1 arc-second MHW Coastal Digital Elevation Model) • Top Left: St. John, US Virgin Islands showing the watershed source area (This map and the map shown to the right were generated using US Army Corps of Engineers US Virgin Islands Orthophoto Mosaic) • Right: Coral Bay, St. John with its protected waters and lands. Bathymetry shown was collected after the 2017 hurricane season in November and December of 2017.

There are futures in #ecosystem #restoration. Get into it.

Imagine employing the energy and commitment of all the people protesting in the streets, instead participating in mass actions of earth restoration. It'll take a bit more planning than making a cardboard sign and chanting slogans while obstructing traffic, but a beach or a river could be cleaner, #water could be captured for reuse and to infiltrate back into the earth, #CityForests and #orchards could be established, marginalized people could have #gardens, rain gardens could be installed, food distributed. This is a tiny list. You can think of others.
#Tolerance + #Cooperation = Power for #Peace
Design a #benestrophe (many good things happening at once; the opposite of a #catastrophe).

Mykle, to climate

Level 5 Drought continues on Vancouver Island and rivers in our area are feeling the effects. But there is good news as work continues to create more sustainability in our watersheds.
