I'm sorry, Canada.

La saison des feux commence et l'été devrait battre tous les records de chaleur. J'ai pensé acheter un masque pour courir. Et je m'enlignais vers le Respro Ultra-light. Avez-vous déjà couru avec un tel masque ? Est-ce supportable ?

This is your reminder that the smoke from forest fires is not just tree smoke.
It's smoke from burnt buildings, burnt vehicles, burnt animals, and everything the fire has destroyed in its path.
Check air quality often (several times a day) and be prepared to protect yourself and loved ones, including your pets, if need be.

Because our Canadian wildfire smoke is drifting across the US, you might want to share this with your followers.

It is website where you can check the air quality of any US area, simply type in your area code, city, or state for results.

This chart shows annual hours of smoke-filled skies in Calgary from 1953 to 2023.

As the first wildfire smoke of the 2024 season blew into the city this week, it's hard to convey the sadness it elicited in a lot of folks here.

There's a growing realization this is our new reality. And a genuine sense of mourning.

Welp, now that wildfire and smoke season have started in earnest, I'll get back to updating my wildfire smoke resources list: https://cryptpad.fr/pad/#/2/pad/view/4Mi5umUBZUCSIt7qA6kMSiZK5ZoTntWUlSXkJ9y1ZhU/

If you know of resources in your area of the US related to wildfire smoke mitigation like:
-places or organizations giving out free KN95s or air filters
-places where people can go to get out of the smoke

then please let me know and I will add that information to the doc! I'm also looking for resources on actions people can take to mitigate climate change, preferably actions they can take immediately (petitions people can sign, actions they can go to in the near future, that kind of thing), but that is a secondary goal.

Northern Cree community students' project on natural fire retardants in boreal forest wins at science fair

Kristopher Neeposh and Rory Henry-Felstead won 1st place at Quebec Indigenous Science Fair

Their most significant finding was that jack pine extract, applied to different materials, seemed to slow the spread of flames. They found that it even out-performed ammonium sulfate, a commercially available fire retardant.
