Check out this Martian panorama, captured by Curiosity two days ago, on Sol 4174. It is made of 50 adjacent images, each 1328x1184 pixels. Let's go for some zooms👇

@pomarede Did you know there is a site that de-Bayer's these Bayer filtered MastCams.... When you use the images from the site the image credit becomes NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS/fredk

Earlier today on Mars - Another drive by Perseverance rover. This L-NavCam was acquired just before the end of the drive on Sol 1140, it provides a nice view down Neretva Vallis (upper right)

Another drive from Perseverance rover takes it to site 52.0870 during Sol 1138 (May 3, 2024).

EDIT - The rover has not yet reached the downslope, see recent post by @65dBnoise

Attached is a roughly processed 16-tile NavCam image acquired at the end of the drive. NASA/JPL-Caltech

@65dBnoise Perfect, useful to know :)

@pgiulan @65dBnoise To measure all of the mechanisms on the rover, fiducials are installed all over the turret, on the end of the rover's arm, as well as on the tops of the steering actuators and on the top deck of the rover etc. The markings are a staple of machine vision systems that can serve two parallel purposes, to calibrate cameras and to calibrate various mechanisms on the rover. The one you refer to on Perseverance rover is one the smaller 'April Tags'.

Another drive by Perseverance rover on sol 1137, takes the rover further West to site number 52.0748. This L-NavCam was assembled and roughly processed using all 16 available tiles (edited as the tiles are now in)

@pomarede

It looks impressive enough on my 21.5 inch monitor :) Can only imagine it on a 43 :)

The path up here on the edge of the valley feels pretty safe for the rover and probably not a huge challenge for the route planners, but if they choose to visit Bright Angel on the other side of the valley, then they have to traverse down and across. That will be an interesting challenge

What's really exciting about the drive down the slope of the Neretva riverbank is that at some point along the way, maybe within a week or two from now, the rover will be visible by 's RTE camera, at the top right corner of an RTE image, as seen in this graphic by @stim3on where I marked a possible appearance with "future Perseverance".

More about that in this thread: https://mastodon.social/@65dBnoise/111838897486663166

I've been wondering about this for a while. The team modified the heli's software to gather data, which it could in theory collect for many years... AFAIK We've not received any images from the rover since 1069, is it still trying to contact the rover daily? Or has that function been turned off to preserve power, so it can gather data for more years? I hope you're right as I hoped to see periodic images as the rover traversed towards the crater rim :)

New site number 52 for on Sol 1129, but apparently at the same location. The rover appears to be stuck in a sand field, although that may not be the reason for its recent inactivity.

Rover Issues?
Software update?
DSN issues?
Bug?
None of the above?

PaulHammond51,

@65dBnoise I'd have to agree re abandoning Bright Angel unless they can spot a very safe path a little further to the West. Loose sands are not happy places for Mars rovers or their drivers.
