screens.

Floating screens - this is a post about the Apple Vision Pro. Gettit?? Anyway I'm asking for recommendations for any fiction that touches on virtual reality?

I've seen a bunch of reviews (I kind of feel like Neistat's one got the to the heart of it the best. Other people talked about feeling lonely, he looked lonely in the way substance affected people look lonely in public.) Very weird. I wonder what the sci fi world has been forecasting about the bigger societal implications of all this?

What's the best AR spec fiction? Is there Apple Vision Pro fan fiction yet I guess is what I'm asking. There's gotta be some horny Apple fans with ideas.

A brief deck about Melbourne Central’s rooftop.

Slide 1. 2023. Me. My arty photo, walking one storey below the rooftop.

Slide 2. 2023. Whatdis. A screenshot from Apple Maps, the blue paint piqued my curiosity!

Slide 3. 1991. Beginnings. Melbourne Central finishes construction. Designed by Kisho Kurokawa from Japan.

Slide 4. Hair. Especially when seeing the city from afar, the Melbourne central office tower reminds me of The Pointy-Haired Boss, looming over the skyline.

Slide 5. 2014. Nike. As part of the Australian Open, Nike collaborates with the centres owner’s GPTgroup on a pop-up tennis court. The first time the empty roof is used.

Slide 6. 2015. Tents. After a short stint Nike packs up and St Jerome’s The Hotel opens up. Considered a success (although only for well heeled patrons), the CBD glamping hotel experience lasts three years.

Slide 7. 2019. Pool. Reunion Island Pool Club opens, a ticketed swimming pool/spa/bar. Another well liked (but how profitable?) venture, twenty thousand visitors enter in it’s five month tenure.

Slide 8. 2019. Reno. GPT Group announce an application has been lodged with City of Melbourne for redevelopment. Designed by ARM Architects, who have returned, having also done the centres first renovation in 2005. It’s to feature a new tall timber structure, as well as more retail, office space, dining and art galleries. It’s slated for a 2021 completion.

2020 - Pandemic. The CBD is hit hard, cultururally as well as economically. The redevelopment never starts, and there are no more updates. Killed by COVID?

Slide 9. 2020. Mural. To keep the space from being completely neglected, GPT Group hire Kitt Benett to cover the space with this mural. Over 100 litres of paint!

A year since I restarted taking pictures.

Slide 1: A year ago I had a truly shit camera, my old iphone with a cracked lens. Because of this I didn’t try to take photos. I waited and let interesting patterns come to me.

Slide 2: A year later and I have a fancy camera. Fancy for me, though, is an eleven year old micro four thirds camera. But now I’m trying too hard. Taking photos when I’ve only seen a subject not an image.

Reminder to me and others in 2024 relax and be open to inspiration coming in, a softening. Instead of always forcing creativity, a hard process.

remediation.

Few snaps of this old petrol station, before it becomes 8 three story dwellings. Sorry to see the old fixtures go, but excellent to see the feasibility of converting otherwise wasted land. Although good luck goes to the developers: Remediation of these sites can often take years and cost upwards of $1 million. And when the owners of these small, privately owned stations have gone into liquidation (sometimes decades ago!) the cost of cleanup falls to the next site owner. Consequently many of these take a long to sell, becoming wasted land and eye sores in the meantime.

Today, on a bike commute home from work, I notice other riders snaking together then splitting off. I normally commute at odd hours and travel against traffic. Normally I’m alone on my bike. Today, however, I was slipstreaming with everyone else. I felt connected.

I tested my new old camera from 1954 that produces square images on a 35 mm film, so on a roll of 36 you can squeeze in over 50 images! (I used the cheapest color film available) 📸

Gear:
• Zeiss Ikon Taxona (Germany, 1954)
• Tessar f/3.5 37.5 mm
• Kodak VISION3 250D

Such a cool concept! Budget medium format vibe. And higher res than half frame (ie pen cameras too).

Outside his resort-apartment window, insects buzzed and tourists chitty-chattered. Their own kind of buzzing. Sammy didn’t make this connection. He was dragging a small subwoofer across his living room.

Directly beneath him, in their resort room, Dave and Linda were not chatty-chatting. No fucking way. Dave was staring up at the roof, leaning on his knuckles on the kitchen bench.
“Hasn’t he already played it in that spot?”, he asked Linda, not looking at her.
“Dave. Just leave it, you have to get packed. Remember we’re leaving at 4 so we don’t miss the airport bus?”

Sammy leapt onto the couch and pulled his laptop onto him in one move. It was the kind of smooth you get after three days of running between slightly rearranged sub and your couch.
BRRRRRRPPPP
Again, a dull tone emitted from the speaker. Both explosive and then continuous.
Sammy cocked his head to one side.

Dave twitched in one eye.
“I’m not going back Linda. The whole resort can’t be held hostage by this guy. Don’t ya see, everyone just keeps leaving, but because he lives here he can just keep making this, noise”, here he curled a fist facing him, before dramatically sticking his index finger up and to the roof. “Fuck the airport bus. I’m taking a stand”.
