Someone asked me recently about the ability to "Read the Room" and whether or not this was a skill that can be developed. I certainly believe it is a skill and can be cultivated. Perhaps the most impactful maxim which can guide us in this regard was taught to me by a Jedi Knight who went by the name Zenchi from the Temple of the Jedi Order. He told me, "Learn to Observe without needing to React."

The Internet, particularly the social media algorithm demon, has created an incentive not just to React to everything, but to Observe specifically to React. In this way we often bias our interpretation of that which we observe with a skew towards the least charitable interpretation so that our reaction can be as extreme as possible.

To counteract this and hone this skill of reading the room, we can practice several behaviors that will improve our lives.

First, be the last person to speak in an interaction. When you allow everyone else to have their say, it gives you a chance to examine their perspectives and gauge their intentions.

Second, questions are better than statements. The cultivation of curiosity leads to more robust conversations. A statement can often be viewed as dismissive or ultimate in nature, sometimes leaving a conversation partner feeling as though there's nothing left to say. Curiosity, by contrast, is almost always viewed as an invitation to continue discourse.

Third, speak in a way that is pleasant. We've been taught to rely on flippancy and sarcasm in modern discourse as we assume the intentions of others or deliberately misconstrue them to make ourselves look superior. By engaging with someone in a pleasant way, we can disarm hostility. Even if others fail to uphold this standard, we will still maintain our own peace which is of a value beyond measure.

@Julian_Invictus

Those are great advices. I'd add that sadly, you probably also have to identify and avoid those platforms that actively encourage hostility.

But if you're on Mastodon, you probably did that already :D

I read different news site and I noticed that the editorial line actually push towards or away from hostility. The more clickbait it is, the more agitated the comment section will be.

if you're into "Pixel Art 3D" please try my Blender add-on "Pixel Unwrapper"

been using it for a while, and it's at a point where I can just smash "Unwrap" and no longer need manual touch ups! (after adding seams)

(also get in touch because I might need help soon )

@noio Nice. Do you have a Youtube channel or something to show it in action?

When you first launch a game do you...

@grumpygamer I start playing, immediately get annoyed by motion blur, mouse acceleration, resolution scaling and fov too low and then begins the options quest + modding

I am trying to make different options for object inspection. Do not pay attention HUD, only the mechanics are of interest now. What else exists, remember? I want to reproduce as many as possible in order to choose for game

so many games made in Unity/GameMaker/etc that only have a Windows version on Steam, and no Mac and Linux. I know Mac complicates things with the notarization thing, but what about Linux? Thought commercial engines major selling point was cross-platform capabilities.

Beldarak,
@Beldarak@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink I used to release on three platforms but my next game will probably only be available to Windows, and maybe Linux but not right away.

For Linux, it's more an effort versus reward issue. While it's easy to get the game running on it, I have no way to test it so that's always misery at release and it means having to build/upload 2 times for each update.

It's more effort than releasing on Windows, for 2.5% of the total game revenues. The stress is not worth it. After release, why not.

@djlink @ravindra Yes, they're used to tinkering to make stuff work and you can really feel it

Anyone got great recommendations for books talking (with tons of schemas!^^) about level-design, layout, etc...?

I feel like there's not much out there on internet about that subject and a ton of "level design" tutorials talk about the pixel-art/modelling aspects

I'm interested in how to create interesting map layouts.

I'd say I'm at the intermediate level on that picture and from there, I can't seem to go higher by myself

i want to make the tires sink into soft terrains (sand, mud)
without installing a whole dynamic tire tracks system

anyone got inspiration for sane ways to do this?

(+ I'll tell you how i hacked it in this vid 🤫)

Beldarak,
@Beldarak@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@noio

Not sure it's sane (and it could lead to maybe a lot of problems I can't think of right now), but I think I'd check (via Raycasts) what type of terrain I'm standing on and just reduce the diameter of my wheels' colliders if I'm on soft terrain.

I'm actually convinced that's what you did here for the video :D

A $199 jump rope with a $12 monthly subscription. The world is doomed. I'm calling it.

@grumpygamer I thought the article would be a cynical piece mocking the thing but no :D

That's impressive. I usually try not to be too judgmental but anyone buying this is an idiot 😐
