Of course is claiming he has brought down ... but the actual Q. which he should be asked is: what exactly did he do to bring it down?

And of course the answer is sweet FA.... he's been too busy playing party politics to be attending to real issues.... and if he then claims its the BoE what done it, then the Q, is at what medium term cost...

ggrrrrrr [the sound of an Emeritus Professor of Political Economy grinding his teeth]

The good news is &Young have appointed a global chief, the first time one of the global big four firms has been headed by a woman.

But before we get too misty eyed, we should recall that it would not be the first time a has appointed a woman in times of trouble, partly because eligible men took a step back & partly because the woman is being (potentially) sacrificed.

I wish Janet Truncale well & hope she is not about to be thrown down the 'glass precipice'!

ChrisMayLA6,
@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us avatar

@fkamiah17

Some years ago I had an excellent (female, of course) student who wrote a really good (first class) dissertation on the 'glass precipice' - since then I've often seen examples & thought she had been particularly prescient

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 109.

Like the 5 previous volumes in Michel Pastoureau's series of books on colour, White: The History of a Colour (2022) is a mixed bag. Its full of great insights & wonderful illustrations, but (unavoidably) repeats some aspects of the previous books & never really completely coheres into a focussed argument about white as a colour. That said, there is so much of interest, that you can forgive this (inevitable?) short-coming.

@bookstodon

ChrisMayLA6,

@wootube @bookstodon

yes, Newton's colour theory & musical scales get a quick mention too....

ChrisMayLA6,
@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us avatar

@wootube @bookstodon

yes, he also talks about terminology & perception in all the six books (sorry.... didn't want to really emphasise the whole series)

ChrisMayLA6,
@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us avatar

@wootube @bookstodon

Then you'd likely enjoy the book as that's one of the issues he discusses in his 'history' of white - how it was perceived as (and not) a colour

As Vinod Thomas (ex-World Bank) writes in the FT, at

'it would help to put front & centre the top 20 countries that account for four-fifths of all emissions, starting with China, the US & India. Although [these 3] have greatly expanded solar & wind capacity, they have also increased the use of fossil fuels — which is what matters to the atmosphere. The big emitters need to stop new coal, oil and gas projects'!

Only then can we really start to tackle the

ChrisMayLA6,

Interesting point.... (as ana analogue to my argument about the preference for GDP per capita).

Wikipedia has the (unranked) data here

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions_per_capita#:~:text=Considering%20CO2%20per%20capita,of%20CO%202%20per%20capita).

ChrisMayLA6,
@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us avatar

@KimSJ

Yes, like all such debates you can choose a metric to make your point... thanks for the ranked list of per-capita emissions... at last a list where being 17th the UK is doing better than one might think

ChrisMayLA6,
@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us avatar

@KimSJ

Actually, having thought a bit more about this while sitting away from the laptop, actually I think the aggregate ranking not the per-capita ranking might actually be better as it s the aggregate emissions that are the problem even if morally we might want small societies with high emissions to act to change.... large countries with medium to large emissions (USA) are the real problem, of course

I don't wear a because my father, who fought in WW2 as a pilot (latterly Squadron Leader) in Bomber Command never wore one (not least of all because of how BC veterans were sidelined after the war), but I do wonder if I was on TV (or in public life) such family history would allow me to resist the social pressure to wear one.

People should wear poppies if they so desire, but equally we should be free not to wear them.... in a small way that's exactly the freedom my father fought for!

Another week at the & 's role as useful idiot has been confirmed with 'witnesses' lining up to say he was an idiot, not be trusted & generally incompetent.

So his utility is now coming into focus as the lightning rod (sacrificial lamb?) for ... as more & more is laid at his door, the rest of the shambles will try to hide in the shadow that casts.

But lets be clear: there is blame enough to go around & be shared.

Hurrah... good sense breaks out in the as the 'Waitrose of the North', Booths begins to get rid of self-service check-outs.

Given the price premium at Booths, we (the customers) want the social interaction with staff at the checkouts, not be told to 'scan & bag'!

More importantly, not only do checkouts provide regular local employment, they are also for many semi-isolated shoppers a key bit of rare social interaction... so a welcome reverse!

Apologies, it was a bad turn of phrase.... I was meaning that the number of self-service checkpoints might reflect the number wanting to use them, but I accept it didn't read like that... This week I've been mainly reading, no. 108.

Ave Barrera's The Forgery (2013/2022) is a Mexican #art caper story about an #artist forced to complete a forgery as part of an inheritance fraud. But by the end its unclear (perhaps purposefully) whether the narrator has experienced imprisonment & exploitation by a violent & rich mastermind, or whether its all a fever dream brought on by a hand injury (turning to sepsis). While quite enjoyable its also finally unsatisfying as a novel.

The continuing is reflected in a pre-xmas drop in consumer spending & suggest that a winter is more likely;

Politicians should recall focus on 'effective demand' in driving economic activity.

Whatever else is wrong about , if you impoverish the less wealthy (who are much more likely to spend their income/wealth) then you prompt a decline in economic activity.

Of course, this is exactly what the BoE want, whatever the social costs!

ChrisMayLA6,
@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us avatar

Certainly our local community supplier would seem to confirm that assertion... they're doing fine, expanding & still delivering world class broadband while the big firms are having all sorts of problems
