What if the ModLog was a community?

Every mod action would automatically create a new post. Anyone could see what is going on and express their approval / disapproval with votes. Maybe even comment on the post.

It should probably be a local-only community (no federation) to avoid clogging up other instance's "All" feed with mod actions?

What do you think of this idea?

Who moderates it?

It was a rhetorical question and yet you somehow managed to give the correct response!

People are actually on BlueSky

There's now a decent measurement of #bluesky user numbers (https://bskycharts.edavis.dev/edavis.dev/bskycharts.edavis.dev/bsky_users_total.html) ...

They've got about 1.6M MAUs ...
& 0.8M Weekly unique users & 0.340M Daily.

That's not nothing!

Roughly double mastodon and 60% more than the whole fediverse (by MAUs, see fedidb.org).

Bluesky is quite "international" with large Japanese and Brazilian popltns, and there's real attrition happening IMO.

Still, let the protocol wars begin I suppose?

LOL this is the answer. For better or worse, the Fediverse has a large established culture. I would not fault someone for trying out every possible alternative first.

Do you have any links? I was unable to find any. Also if you don’t mind, what is the benefit to running one’s own BlueSky instance when instance owners don’t control the moderation?

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Some people don’t like ActivityPub because it allows mods/admins to remove their content. If you are the sort of person who believes that a moderator moderating content is “censorship” then the AT protocol is a lot more appealing.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I meant links to instances not owned by the main company. Are there any?

That’s not been my experience (the opposite actually), but the cool thing about the Fediverse is that it has room for all. Infinite diversity in infinite combinations!

Yo @startrek, tell me something?

Do #trashy #tabloids exist in the #StarTrek universe? Does any #journalism whatsoever exist in the Star Trek universe?

Because, if not, then it means there are no Tucker Carlsons and no Jon Stewarts, and no John Olivers in that universe. Probably because nothing needs internal investigations in that society as a whole!

And that frankly blows my mind... 🤯

Tabloids? We have a more evolved sensibility…

The federation between mastodon and lemmy is strange. If a M account wants to follow a L community, they need to follow an automated M account which represents the L community. But if any M post mentions that L community, the post will get boosted by the community's M account, so everybody who follows will get a notification. And I'm not sure if this can be moderated from the L side, because it seems like it never goes through L. Such as - do you see this @opensource ? Does a L mod see this?

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

The problem is that I don’t think the mods of the L community are able to ban M accounts from mentioning the L community, or prevent the reboost on the M side.

They can, same as any other account.

For those that are confused, realize Lemmy and Mastodon are two ways of displaying the same ActivityPub information:

  • Mastodon “favorite” is a Lemmy “upvote”
  • A Lemmy “comment” is a Mastodon “reply”
  • A Mastodon post with a mention is a Lemmy post within a community
  • A Lemmy “community” on Mastodon appears as a Mastodon account that boosts (retweets) everything that tags (is posted within) it.
  • Viewing a Lemmy community from Mastodon shows the entire community (posts and comments) in chronological order. Yes, it’s messy but doable.
  • Viewing a Lemmy account from Mastodon shows a feed of that user’s posts with URLs to the Lemmy instance they were posted to.
  • If a Mastodon user mentions a community, that toot gets posted to the community. Replies to the toot appear as comments on Lemmy and replies on Mastodon.
  • As others have noted, a toot exceeding a Lemmy instances character limit (200 I think by default) will be cut off on Lemmy and “overflow” into the “body” of the post.

Things that don’t directly “translate” AFAIK are the downvote arrow and the community moderator for both of which Mastodon has no equivalent.

@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

You had asked about a ban, which is possible. I’m actually not sure how post removals are interpreted by Mastodon.

That all said, it’s clunky to view one app via the other just because they both “speak” activitypub and recommended to have separate accounts.

Gentle reminder to everyone that support for ends in about 90 weeks. Many computers can't upgrade to Win 11 so here are your options:

  1. Continue on Win 10 but with higher security risks.
  2. Buy new and expensive hardware that supports Win11.
  3. Try a beginner friendly distro like . It only takes about two months to acclimate.

Yep, when you make a Windows installer USB with Rufus it has the option to disable TPM requirement and the need for a Microsoft account.
