Eclipse with a weird green reverse image that appeared on all the pix I took — yes, with my phone.

ADDED: And yes, I know it's a terrible photo of it, but hey, you gotta try. But the lens flare is kind of interesting:)

@AskPippa Watched from Windsor (working here today), so got down to a tiny sliver, but not totality. Plus side - it was a very clear sky.

Despite much hoopla about increasing financial assistance, the Ford government 's real year-over-year funding for student financial assistance programs is almost exactly where it was in 2016.

Employees at The Gathering Place, a community health centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland have voted overwhelmingly yes to becoming members of CUPE. The 84 employees provide services, meals and an overnight shelter to people in the community who struggle with daily living.

“Should the people of Ontario accept that government policy was being decided on a massage table in Vegas?” NDP Leader Marit Stiles asked Ford in the legislature’s daily question period.

All these red states are now boasting about how they are withdrawing from the American Library Association. They aren’t just satisfied with banning books, they want to get rid of the places that keep and lend them, too. The Christian Right is on the march.

Carl Sagan once warned us of the “dumbing down” of America. He warned of a time when our “critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...”

That time is upon us. We must do all we can to prevent that darkness from taking hold.

CraigSaunders,
@CraigSaunders@union.place avatar

@georgetakei They clearly are people who haven't been to a library lately. As municipal, state and federal governments abdicate their responsibilities around affordable housing, mental health, the opioid crisis, etc., libraries are the front line for all social challenges. Library workers deserve our praise, big raises and better funding.

Do you love ? Live in the or Simcoe?

On Tuesday night, come to 125 Simcoe Road in Bradford, ON, to support workers now in the fourth week of their for a first contract.

The town gave 6% to people earning over $100,000 (80% men), 5% to police (almost all men), 4% in the first year for male-dominated units, but is only offering 2% to the library workers (92% ). After years without raises.

"Everyone was so much nicer in the world when I was younger -- it's gone downhill since"

Adam Mastroianni spent ten years studying why so many people have this feeling -- Hanna Rosin has a great Q&A with him here: https://www.theatlantic.com/podcasts/archive/2023/07/are-you-plagued-by-the-feeling-that-everyone-used-to-be-nicer/674838/

FWIW, this isn't a feeling I've had

I remember childhood in the 70s and 80s being studded with regular cruelty and casual violence ...

... and that was in my comparatively safe middle class Canadian neighborhood!

Others, in less stable situations? hoo boy

CraigSaunders,

@clive We're of a similar age. I remember regular bullying and occasional fistfights as part of my childhood and youth. Can't imagine coming out in high school back then.

Are you an experienced communications professional with a background in work? And * in Canada?* (ideally Toronto)? And looking for work (maybe a decent-paying three or four month contract)? Then I want to hear from you.

Stoat, to nonbinary

Saw a post saying non-binary aunts and uncles are "Ankles" and had this in my head ever since.

CraigSaunders,
@CraigSaunders@union.place avatar

@Stoat Going the other way, do you know what is being used commonly for a sibling's enby offspring?

I've heard and used Niebling (Nibbling?), but nothing else...and nobody knows what the hell I'm talking about when I refer to my niebling (who is very cool).

CraigSaunders,
@CraigSaunders@union.place avatar

@Stoat Sibkid - I like that one, though it does relate more to my relationship with my sibling than directly with my nibling. On the other hand, more people might pick up on it.

Thanks!

Lots of politicians go to the Pride Parade in . It's a good thing, but the safe thing for a performative politician to do.

The ones who really care are more likely to show up for the Trans March. I saw Olivia Chow there. Did I miss any of the others? Particularly frontrunners? (Of the 102 candidates I definitely won't recognize them all).

Quiet quitting this, quiet quitting that. But no one talks about quiet pay cuts, which is when your salary isn't adjusted for inflation. So when you've been receiving the same salary for the past 3 years, you're actually taking pay cuts because your money has less value now.

CraigSaunders,
@CraigSaunders@union.place avatar

@teacherbuknoy An employer this week described 3% as generous "in this time of falling inflation." Didn't mention it was a three-year deal with 1.5/1.5/3 when inflation for those years was about 3.5/8.5/4.5.

At the same time the private sector for many of these jobs were offering 5-11%/yr for three years.

And they wonder why there are retention problems in the public sector.
