Late last year, I ran a small project with a nonprofit in San Francisco. We gave out instant film cameras (color and black and white) to 5 people who were either unhoused or who lived nearby in one of the 'SROs'. We did a tiny, tiny exhibition.

I'm still working to figure out how to make this a more regular thing, and how to show their work, because they have such amazing stories to tell.

There's a bench in my apartment and when I sit on it, that tells Benson one of two things is happening:

We're getting ready for a walk.
Or it's Mommy time.

Mommy time is when Benson asks for physical affection and play. And he plays rough.

I think people would be alarmed if they saw the way me and Benson play. He's all big head, wide open mouth, big teeth, and crazy eyes jumping and pulling and tugging and zoomie-ing, and biting (on the toys in my hands), and growling. It's effing terrifying looking. He makes me laugh. I love it.

A couple times I misjudge the distance between my fingers and his canines but not very often. He sometimes gets too excited and wants to chew on my shoe but not very often.

He's big and heavy and those teeth are no joke. But he's my big Schmoopie.

I feel now that Hamas agreed to a condition that Izzy has no reason to agree to, and now that the people taking refuge in Rafah are being leafletted to evacuate (where?) and there's stuff already happening in the West Bank, things are heading to a crisis-crisis.

That Onion article the other day is really too prescient.

I guess everything will 'resolve' itself when the population of Palestinians has basically been reduced to triple digits.

Then, at that point, all the folks with a vested interest in having a geopolitical partner and human laboratory for weapons development, military training, and cutting edge surveillance tech will be satisfied.

No more 'complexity.'

Him: Yes. Well, more radical than I was before. I mean, I'm a white guy. People are used to the bare minimum from me. But shit is fucked up and fuckit. I'm going to do more than that now and if that means radical then yeah, I'm radical.

And then he went on an ACAB rant that was stupendous. This man was raised a good moderate Lutheran and his father was a Lutheran minister. He runs an arts/performance nonprofit in the city. He's got kids, an ex, a current partner, and a mortgage.

He's not a black bloc radical. But he has stepped far away from his socialization. When good liberals are now ACAB, something is happening.

Some of you missed the point but that's ok.

Obama did not cause America's endemic and historic problematicness.

He was the extra pill your doctor adds to your current regime of meds to BOOST the effect of your current meds.

Obama's cultural significance and also stubborn political moderation was the BOOST, the kick in the pants, America's inner Pennywise needed to really announce itself.

But carry on.

For EIGHT years, America experienced cognitive dissonance. The world it knew seemed to be on the brink of whatever the hell this was. New knowledge was dropping, making half this country uncomfortable. A Black family moved into the neighborhood. Black Twitter became a thing. People were learning about daps. Cops weren't your friend. Karens were suddenly visible in the wild.

(I mean, Black folks always been knew about Karen. We
just called her Miss Sally.)

And after those 8 years, America breathed a raggedy sigh of relief and basically did a wilding. They got to' up from the flo' up.

And it's all because they couldn't deal with a Black president.

When I was an undergraduate at , students also occupied Hamilton Hall. The administration didn’t call in NYPD and we didn’t have the shitshow that’s playing out on campus now. Hard to imagine giving money to Columbia after this.

So last night Bestie came over for a drink while I was in the throes of work-related Red Zone and we had this interesting exchange:

Her: So you think it's a genocide?

Me: Absolutely. They're finding mass graves at hospitals.

Her: Well, I read that those could be old gravesites.

Me: Bodies dumped in a pile, under waste, without identification, with zip ties and in medical clothing? Ok.

[notice I don't get into a War of Citations. that's a waste of time.]

Her: It just seems really complicated.

[ah. 'complicated.']

Me: Hm. Well, I believe the UN Special Rapporteur, that woman from Italy, said all the material conditions for genocide have been met.

[drop the expertise hammer and let it lay there.]

Her: [after a pause] Yeah. It's a genocide.

When we have exchanges like this (and we had been talking about how we're so happy to see the campus protests spreading,) I feel that Bestie is trying desperately to hold onto the idea that Israel is the Good Guy.
