FiveSeventeen

@FiveSeventeen@bahn.social

I travel a great deal, but mainly commute to work on the 05.17 from Bremen each week day.

I read heavy books, collect old photographs, and write long letters. My working clothes are kilts, but I do own one pair of jeans.

This is a small, occasional record of those travels by train and bus, of books read and letters written, and sometimes the events in between. Posts are automatically deleted after three months.

Don't expect any deep philosophical content here!

Name a movie or TV series where none of the characters are actually good people. Explain why you think that.

@RickiTarr

I'm not sure whether I need to explain why none of the characters are good in this series, which has been running exclusively on its own channel for quite a while.

The follow up for this, of course, is that if Israel has that right, then so do other countries. And England will be hit by austerity from both Tory parties, red and blue.

"Forgotten Fatherland" by Ben Macintyre.

At the start of chapter five, Macintyre suggests, very strongly, that Nietzsche's lack of faith led to his instability, unhappiness, and lack of a married life.

I rather suspect that this is a pile of steaming poo.

That looks like my evening meals are sorted for this week. Quiche finished, now back to reading "Thoroughly Modern" by Sarah Knights.

No precipitation seen, says my weather app as I walk out into the rain.

The 05.17 is cancelled again, so it'll be a cup of tea at the station, and the hope of the 05.45.

At the end of the year I'll add up the number of cancelations against the times my trains have run, and see whether the DB bonus payments might compensate me for my time.

Plans for my sick day:

Laundry (already in),
Social Media for a while (in progress, obvs.),
Collect new delivery of cigars from the Post Office,
Move certain domains from one server to a new server.
Eat. and drink tea.

It's, as they says, a plan.

The earliest the trains can get though is 20.00, but more likely 21.00. So, booked myself the last available room in the Hotel zur Sonne, which happens to be a suite.

Coincidentally I was looking at this hotel this afternoon, on the internet, with the idea is staying here in February 2024 after a planned party. Looks almost as if I could have made a very good choice.

In Hotel Zur Sonne, a suite with a large couch - or divan - and two basket weave chairs next to the television.

Time on my hands today, so I grabbed the old mobile - I never remember to take my camera with me when I'm out and about - and caught some images of this old, abandoned railway line near Warmsen.

Abandoned railway line near Warmsen. Germany, on a misty November morning.

For youngsters out there: Helmstedt used to be one of the main crossing points on the inner German border from West to East.

I've never really associated squirrels with winter, since they should be hibernating, but with the climate changes we're still seeing them out and about and, to commemorate this, the German post office has put squirrels out as its winter theme this year.

I am pleased to report that my new bookshelves have just been delivered - the ones which should have been here yesterday. I shall now take some public transport to the next screwdriver shop, so that I can put them together....

After a short period out shopping - for one thing I needed and seven I wanted - on for a beer and cigar with friends in the Club.

Now waiting for my partner in a busy restaurant - they are always appropriately late - with a sobering cup of black coffee.

If "Not my King" Charles II really wants to do something for the environment, he should spend less time in a polluting car, and more in his carriage.

Build your own bread roll day. That's the Camembert hidden under the wrinkle-removing cucumbers on top of red-eye tomato slices.

I could definitely do with a facial.

Locals discussing who has died in this small town, with a complete family history to show exactly who is meant.

It's like the first episode of a soap opera, where everyone is introduced in one go, with their relationships.

We're up to 6°C out there today, and the rain has returned.

Nothing that a pint of Guinness and an Ardbeg cannot hold at bay.

See who joins me tonight.

I didn't want to post anything and tempt fate, but both bus and train are running today, and on time.

Yes, I know it's only Tuesday and the rest of the week hangs like a sword of abysmal fate over us, but optimism can be fun, for a while at least.

It's always with a mixture of hope and trepidation that I check the railway schedules at four each morning. Will there be a train for me? Do I have to buy a cup of tea and wait half an hour, or an hour?

Today the first two trains are both listed as running.

Google maps asking me to describe what's on the menu here: Guinness, cider, Newcastle Brown, whiskey and whisky.

No need to complicate things with solid food.
