FiveSeventeen

@FiveSeventeen@bahn.social

I travel a great deal, but mainly commute to work on the 05.17 from Bremen each week day.

I read heavy books, collect old photographs, and write long letters. My working clothes are kilts, but I do own one pair of jeans.

This is a small, occasional record of those travels by train and bus, of books read and letters written, and sometimes the events in between. Posts are automatically deleted after three months.

I was slightly surprised to hear Theresa May (one of several former failed Prime Ministers south of the border) has decided to step down at the next election.

Aside from the fact she cannot possibly go any further down than she already is, thanks to her political insignificance now, I thought she had already slunk off.

Another welcome cold day, with temperatures at around zero but, today, clear skies. Despite the city lights I can even see a few stars.

Second day of the railway strike, and the sticking point is still that the union wants working hours reduced to 35 a week, but pay to remain at the 38 hour level and, of course, the pay rise which seems to have been agreed.

I suspect this tale will continue for quite a while, and the strikes won't stop at two or three consecutive days.

You want to know how sick US society is?

You'll know when you see a burning man, and the thing being pointed at him is not a fire extinguisher, it's a gun.

It's quiche time again, but with a slight difference: the chances are that I will not get to eat any of this, or the other one which is in the oven right now.

The German tradition of celebrating a birthday is that the birthday person gives out all the presents - or gives something to all their fellow workers. So I have slaved away in the kitchen today, and made two quiches and about two kilos of potato salad so that they, my work colleagues, can eat to their heart's content while I, fortunately, am out doing my job on the streets.

There's a jar of pickles too, but I didn't make them.

Up and about: letters posted; shopping done; washing-up moved to a different part of the sink.

Time to dress for Lodge.

@fkamiah17 mine is, fortunately, a cup and a plate, but the will is lacking.

Enjoy your trip. It's decades since I was last in Cardiff, probably the late Seventies when I worked in Nant Gwynant.

Sorting out books to donate to the local street library, which has not been as easy as I had imagined. Fair enough, there are some titles which are very easy to dispose of, some authors too, but....

there are also a few works which you hold in your hand and, with your ego speaking very loudly, wonder whether you ought to keep because when other people see them on your shelves....

Kids: MOOOM can we please stop at McDonald's?!

Mom: We have McDonald's at home.

If the Tory party really want to take back control, then they can start with Thames Water, and then every other (English) water company after that.

A new quiche in the oven, with fresh spinach and plum tomatoes this time. One of my work colleagues commented, lately, that I seem to be eating a lot of quiche - I'm of the generation where the "real men eat quiche" thing was happening - and I didn't want to disabuse them of the fact that you can make many different fillings for your quiche.

And I don't make that many, it's just that all the other things I eat don't get mentioned in the work environment that often. Perhaps they ought to sigh up for social media and follow me?

FiveSeventeen,

@Wen

that certainly is going back a few years, but I remember it as if it were yesterday. Never read the book, though. Perhaps it's about time I did....

Not suggesting, for a moment, that it’s only the mom’s duty to teach children what’s right. But, in this case & for the good of the nation, Boebert should quit & go home to her son. I just want her outta Congress. https://www.kjct8.com/2024/02/28/lauren-boeberts-son-arrested-faces-22-charges/?outputType=amp

Good chance her son won't be at home any more. But she should go anyway.

In 2nd grade, I found a book about USS Constitution in our elementary school library. It was a "5th grade" book, so the librarian had to ask my Mom's permission for me to check it out. 🙄

I read that several times, and it triggered a lifelong love of and fascination with history. Still running strong today!

Encourage your kids' curiosity: you never know where it will lead. 😀

Many years ago a friend came to me to ask advice as his daughter was falling behind on reading and writing in school.

Take her to the library.

He told me they already do that, they take her to the library each week, and she takes out much the same books every single time.

Take her to the library, and you stay outside.

He told me she went to a completely different section of the library to that which they had guided her, chose completely different books, and is now a straight A student.

Many children are under-estimated by adults, and know themselves and their abilities far better. Let them do it. Let them experiment and set their own standards of excellence.

    Out watching a main road through a few small villages, and the weather is calm and warm - at about 12°C - but still with wind warnings.

    Time enough to enjoy a cigar, and then unpack a boiled egg for breakfast. In other pleasures: vegetarian meat and peanut butter sandwiches.

    FiveSeventeen,
    @FiveSeventeen@bahn.social avatar

    @Wen not really, I get paid quite well to sit next to roads, reading a book, doing social media, eating my breakfast, while the speed camera does all the hard work.

    Explaining to one of the adults once again what corrupted files are and it suddenly dawned on me: they know nothing about computers whatsoever, no matter how long they sit in front of one all day.

    So I Googled "corrupt" and brought some light into their dim intellectual world.

    Improving adult education, one exceptionally long and complicated word at a time.

    I should stop by B&N since Im in the area. Not that I need anything, but I miss bookstores, even chains. I havent found any independent bookstores in DE or even good coffee places.

    FiveSeventeen,
    @FiveSeventeen@bahn.social avatar

    @SergKoren there are plenty of small, independent bookshops here in DE, but often not on the High Street. It all depends on which city you are in, and how well you know it.
