Probably one of the hardest things about growing up autistic + ADHD for me was waiting my entire childhood to grow up to adulthood so that I could have the things that really bothered me and upset me handled in a way that wasn't invalidating and be allowed to be myself. Only to discover, once I got to adulthood, that other people felt the same way as me and that empathy and understanding had been options the entire time, it's just that I didn't get to have them

GinevraCat,
@GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

@hazelweakly I hope you get to have them now.
My parents certainly didn't understand why I was so "difficult" - and there was very little information available about neurodivergence around at that time.

    @JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic I think it could also be a comfort thing for other neurotypes. But then, I only figured out I was autistic after raising two autistic children!

    Long night so far.

    A call from my sister just after midnight that she’d taken mum to the hospital.

    Been holding bedside vigil while sister goes home and gets some sleep. Doctors running tests and whatnot. Morphine for the pain. Machines that go “bing”.

    It’s about 4:30am and mum’s snoring with a plethora of tubes and wires.

    Eyes are heavy. Chair is uncomfortable. The nurses showed me where I could make a cup of coffee for myself.

    Grading. I hate it. Big, summative assessments. I don't hate the process of grading - I hate the deep sense of failure that comes as I look at ALL THESE KIDS WHO HAVE FORGOTTEN THE BASICS OF MATHEMATICS.

    It's that time of year when I question whether I would do more good to society cutting verges or packing shelves in the local Aldi.

    GinevraCat,
    @GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

    @PatrickoftheG True. But at their age if they can't do the work that I provide without me sitting on them, they don't really deserve the grades ☹️. (And they have plenty of practise available).

    (Aside from the kiddos with actual special needs - them I will walk through the revision. )

    GinevraCat,
    @GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

    @grrrr_shark @PatrickoftheG I wish I could teach classes outside of the standard school system. It's designed broken. But it's a monopoly employer.

    My children were both homeschooled until we immigrated. Eldest for ~10 years - class valedictorian eventually. Youngest for ~6 years. Now in a "regular" high school. I hope the years we kept him out of the system have immunized him against the worst of it 🤞.

    GinevraCat,
    @GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

    @grrrr_shark @PatrickoftheG Both my husband and I have teacher parents. When we were initially told we would have to homeschool we were horrified! Now I know it's the best thing we could have done.
    (But that doesn't mean I support homeschooling unconditionally - for a few children, school is their safe and happy place.)

    GinevraCat,
    @GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

    @grrrr_shark @PatrickoftheG Yup. ☹️ There's damage to be undone. When my daughter was about 10, her therapist told us that they were only then getting to some of the damage that her 5 months of "regular" school had done when she was 6.

    Go easy on both of you. You both need a recovery time. And it's so much faster to learn individually than in a class. Also - no rush.

    GinevraCat,
    @GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

    @grrrr_shark It's sooooo difficult. We were so lucky to find a group of like-minded homeschoolers in our area. (Plus I didn't have to do the teaching - my mom, a retired primary school teacher, did all the heavy lifting).

    GinevraCat,
    @GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

    @grrrr_shark Online with your dad, maybe? It's very helpful not to have to be the parent and the teacher. (I teach my son in the regular school. It's a bit weird.)

    GinevraCat,
    @GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

    @grrrr_shark What field is she interested in?

    GinevraCat,
    @GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

    @grrrr_shark Cool. Don't overestimate what she needs at uni though - as far as I can tell, at least here in NL, most computer science courses start quite basic. You would know more about that.

    And maths is probably just up to calculus and some fun statistics / matrices. It depends what school leaving qualification you want to end up with. I have Opinions. (with a capital O).

    GinevraCat,
    @GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

    @grrrr_shark :(. I hate timed tests. So much pressure and so completely unrelated to skills or real world tasks. :( :(.

    Diary of an ASD Squirrel. Day 132 , Friday 08/03/2024

    TL:DR Walking is on the way to becoming a daily thing. I realised today that folks I have told about being ASD are avoiding me !

    Overslept this morning , managed to catch herself in passing as she left the house to go to the office.
    Is it the sign of a healthy relationship that we see each other for about 3 hours a day, even when she’s working from home.

    Went for a walk again today - got a new ‘short’ route to go fwd with. At 2.5km - about 4500 steps - it’s not dead long but there is a mix of terrain & some steep bits so it’s not a bad route at all. It should be fairly picturesque in the right conditions (so long as I look away from the new new housing estate! )

    I have discovered something disconcerting, not upsetting per-se but defo disconcerting.
    With the exception of the lovely Peeps on Mastodon, most of the older people I have told about my ASD have not been in touch since I told them.

    I know a number of people on here are actively resisting assessment because of the fear of stigmatism but that has never been a problem for me (& still isn’t ). I am surprised at the fact that (in the case of my Uncle & Aunt & my Dad) folks that have known me literally all my life now want even less to do with me than they did before.

    I’m a loner, always have been (with the exception of herself) , so never been that close to my family , certainly not since I moved away from my parents, but to not hear from any of the seniors (or indeed my friend across the road , who I told a few weeks ago) is, as I say, disconcerting.

    Despite others reactions I am steadfast in my resolve to get a proper diagnostic assessment ,I NEED to know . Bollocks to what others think. If they think that I am suddenly different because I know why I am the way I am then that is on them!

    Watched ‘The Godfather’ for the very first time (yes I know ! ) I can see why it is something of a cult movie.
    Got Parts 2 & 3 on my movie radar.

    Managed to squeeze in an hour or so of NMS in, wanted to finish Phase 2 of the rerun of Omega but got distracted , so I now have objectives in every phase complete , but only phase 1 completely finished.

    Watching ‘Silent Witness’ with the help of a couple of pints of cider & a pizza.

    Final Thoughts:

    We like to think that 2024 western civilisation has reached the point where things like mental health stigmatisation are in the past. Sadly this is not the case.

    Thank you to all those who are helping me on this journey, in a myriad different ways. I am thankful to each & every one of you! 🫂 🫶🐿️🖖

    @actuallyautistic @Tim_McTuffty There is a LOT of misinformation and prejudice about autism especially in the world. I teach at an international school and there is also a cultural influence on the way it is perceived. Labels do matter, and they also can change the lens through which people see you.
    Sometimes it just takes time for others to adjust. I hope this is the case for you.

    From a personal point of view:

    Here's why I do not buy the "ADHD meds are addictive for people with ADHD" bullshit:

    You know how ADHD folks keep saying "Look, if it's that addictive, why do I forget it all the time?"

    I think this morning a finer point on this hit me, after many days without it and taking it a little late for work today:

    If I do not take my ADHD meds, I don't notice. At least, not until it is way too late. Because this is our default mode as ADHD folk. This is who and how we are.

    I do notice when I have taken them. Many times, I feel them kick in - not like a jolt of some drug, but suddenly, I realise I can focus and express myself clearly when 10 minutes earlier I was struggling.

    Triffen, to accessibility

    The model for the previous post, printed in flexible filament with fuzzy skin and installed on the bathroom tap. I always had problems with this "pull up" way to switching between the shower and the tap, but this one is good quality and I can use it, but my child still finds it too slippery.

    GinevraCat,
    @GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

    @Triffen Very satisfying. What filament did you use for this?

    GinevraCat,
    @GinevraCat@toot.community avatar

    @Triffen Nice. I have some TPU I want to start printing with, but I'm nervous bc I've read / heard stuff about TPU clogging up the print nozzle or sticking to the bed.
