I'm trying to write down some ideas for our campaign map that I haven't seen in other adventure/fantasy settings

One of them is taken from real life. A freezing river delta like the Lena River in Russia. It's an unmappable half-frozen mess of slushy ponds, frozen mud, permafrost, rivers that shift and flood a little differently each season, and treacherous ice dams.

Other ideas. I think semi-arid places like the Sahel are underrepresented in fantasy. Mesa-strewn table lands. Dry arroyos. Canyons concealing villages. Lots of construction with clay, mud and stone. Housing and forts cut into cliffsides

I have an idea for an order of mages who fled a war and took up residence in a ruin. They used gravity magic to carve out new housing and defenses for themselves and other refugees, stacking up walls, fortresses and towers from chunks of broken granite and marble

Artificial islands floating in an artificial lake, planted with food forests like ancient Tenochtitlan. Pools full of rainwater (cenotes), aqueducts, terra preta (fertile soil made from refuse). Canals and wooden bridges. Markets and vendors on boats.

I'd like to do an interesting take on a forest dwelling culture. But I can't really think of one. In the Elder Scrolls they have those elves who make their own houses out of giant mushrooms, which is neat. I dunno, I'll think of something.

I've told this story before: While working at a small town paper, a principal told me a middle school kid had brought a gun to school. I called the police chief, who denied it happened. I told him I knew it happened already and just wanted the report. Angry about being caught in his lie, he yelled at me and hung up. Later that day he went to the city council to cite the incident as a reason why his cops needed automatic weapons in patrol cars.

one new year's when I was a kid we decided we were going to make a bunch of confetti and jump around and scream at midnight. So we did that, and we were so loud so suddenly that our dog got scared and ran diagonally across the room leaving a stream of piss behind him.
