Trying to get a server setup on Google Cloud Platform is incredibly frustrating, y'all.

This needs to be a terraform apply and open a browser sort of thing.

Why in the year of 2023 is IPv6 not enabled by default on GCP? Why? WHY?? And why is it 18 steps to enable?

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

@tharper I’m helping a non-profit get a server setup for their members’ use. It has GCP credits, so using those.

Here are some story templates you can use to promote and the to your friends.

  1. Download the 2 images

  2. Put a link sticker to https://joinmastodon.org/apps on the “try Mastodon” image. Add a fun arrow sticker to draw attention.

  3. Put a link sticker to your fediverse profile, but with your handle as text on the “follow me” image.

Example attached.

You can follow me on Mastodon: Mastodon is the only Twitter alternative that: • has over 11 million people using it • is truly federated, meaning no single company “owns” it • will be supported by WordPress, Tumblr, and more soon!

Explanation: all of the browsers on the right except Firefox are just Chrome with different UI and branding. To help reduce Google’s influence over the Web as a platform, use Firefox or Safari.

I just did an interview with a Canadian journalist about the Swedish home guard and total defence system and whether such a system could be created for Canada.

My argument is that yes, it should be, but that you need to remember that the Swedish total defence system is rooted in Swedish social compromise. The old Swedish elites chose to share power with the labour movement after the 1920s and Sweden's military system, like so much else, is a product of this.

I saw a short edit of an incredible documentary a few years ago about a Vietnamese American refugee living in Oregon telling her life story.

Her son is one of the most talented documentarians I’ve ever met and her story is powerful.

Please take 1 minute to vote for it to win $45,000 in finishing funds. This story needs to be told.

Most moderation problems I have seen discussed recently would disappear if everyone was on a server operated by someone they personally knew in meatspace.

Fediverse servers should be the size of a chosen family at most. It’s ok to post in your parents’ home. It’s ok to move in with your cousins. It’s ok to move into your own home. Your digital home should feel as comfortable as your physical home. You should be able to open/close your own door as you please.

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

@dale I know it’s not straight forward today, but it’s the direction I think we need to move.

We can make the server software as easy to maintain as a WordPress site. We can have super cheap managed hosted options. The legal obligations are effectively a non-issue at < 50 people scale who aren’t pirates or pedophiles. Mastodon and other fediverse apps authors are working as fast as we can to improve the UX. Many Mastodon UX issues are already solved on other server implementations.

VCs and tech journalists on LinkedIn keep hyping the idea of a super app for the US and EU markets.

A super app would give a company I already get a mediocre experience from the ability to ensure all of my digital experiences are mediocre. No thanks.

Asking for subjects, er, citizens of Great Britain and its present-day-still-somehow colonies to swear allegiance to a king feels so, so bizarre to me as someone raised in the US.

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

@jvschrag @bougiewonderland Double yikes on behalf of the immigrants.

The US pledge of allegiance to the flag “and to the republic, for which it stands” is less cringe than to an unelected person to me. Also, the US has a constitutionally protected right to choose not to pledge allegiance that’s been affirmed repeatedly by the Supreme Court. I’d still prefer US schools not lead it daily.

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

US leaders swear to uphold the Constitution of the people.

The people do not swear allegiance to a leader.

King Charles should call the whole thing off and end the monarchy with the queen’s death.

Jeremiah,

@joshsusser “The flying spaghetti monster said so!” is as valid of a reason as the other reasons. 🤣

More good arguments for being a macro-optimist about the US.

~”A US American must be at least 36 years old to have participated in an election in which the Republican candidate for president won the most votes. A US American must be at least 52 years old to have participated in two presidential elections in which the Republican nominee got the most votes.”

You have an API which lets you get details about a specific thing by its numerical ID:

/api/thing/1
/api/thing/2
...
/api/thing/789
etc

If you wanted to get details for ALL the things - which of these options would you want to see?

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

@Edent I’d use /things/ consistently with it for the collection and /things/id for an item

The leaf software architecture creates smart products that are more secure, more resilient, and not at risk of becoming e-waste prematurely.

It describes software that utilizes local execution and data storage, autonomous functionality, and federated interoperability.

It benefits the user while reducing security risk liability and operational costs for the manufacturer.

Here is my talk introducing with slides and annotated transcript:
