Noticed two Allen’s hummingbird chicks almost ready to fledge on the path to my parents’ house.

I see dozens of parrots almost every time I leave the house, but I can’t imagine a time when seeing them won’t put a smile on my face. I guess it’s an el lay thing to be cynical and act like you dgaf about anything. But amidst all the awful stuff happening everywhere, the parrots are happy to be a constant joy.

I always like the time of year when the Black-chinneds are around. Their behavior is pretty different from the Allen’s and Anna’s that I see year-round. Their hovering is shakier and they make a lot more use of the tail for stability. And in flight they have a squeaky sound as opposed to more of a buzzy sound that the Allen’s and Anna’s have. They are tough too—they get chased around a lot but keep coming back.

One of my favorites. It took about a year before I could make sense of what the hummingbirds were doing. And I suppose it took them a year to be completely fearless when I was around. It finally happened. If there’s something you think you can do, you probably can.

Jgbird,

And you owe it to yourself to try. Who knows how your life might completely change?

Jgbird,

@elaterite Thank you for saying that, Bob! My setup is pretty simple—the D500 with the 200-500 lens. I don’t use anything for flash or refraction; just natural light. I’d like to know how to do that stuff but haven’t learnt it yet.

From earlier this year. I ended up seeing this bird get eaten in midair!

Snuck out with the camera to find this bewildered juvenile Coop’s. At this stage they have the flight part down but when they reach the prey they aren’t fast enough with the talon yet.
