Easy to miss in Mastodon's latest update, but the most-requested features are indeed coming "soon:"

"...quote posts, improved content and profile search, and groups. We’re also continuously working on improving content and profile discovery, onboarding, and of course our extensive set of moderation tools, as well as removing friction from decentralized features. Keep a lookout for these updates soon."

@TootUncommon @originalg @davidslifka @spreadmastodon @fediversenews Right, you don't have a use case for them, therefore nobody else does.

@FinchHaven @davidslifka @MrShoggoth @spreadmastodon @fediversenews No one is saying quote tweets can't be used to commit abuse.

That would be an incredibly stupid thing to say, because obviously it happens.

What people are arguing over is whether quote tweets make abuse worse or more frequent, or whether they just shift which tools the abusers use.

That's where data analysis comes in.

    @objectinspace @atomicpoet @kissane @fediversenews Thats true to some extent. I've tried out both Calckey and Akkoma recently and they both have a lot of capabilities that Mastodon should learn from, and I'm seriously considering moving to a self-hosted GoToSocial solo instance once it's closer to complete (it's currently in alpha).

    At the same time, Mastodon is where the bulk of the attention & users are, which means it's got most of the inertia.

    KelsonV,
    @KelsonV@wandering.shop avatar

    @skotchygut @atomicpoet @ohmrun @kissane She's right that an awful lot of Fediverse discourse, especially Mastodon discourse, tends toward knee-jerk responses that end up throwing out the valid criticism.

    You don't have to look very far for that.

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews So, same concept as Lemmy. I wonder how well they currently federate with each other

    KelsonV,
    @KelsonV@wandering.shop avatar

    @wjmaggos @atomicpoet @fediversenews I wonder how well WriteFreely will work for this case once they add support for incoming replies. (Currently it's publish only, having grown out of the write.as/reply.as/snap.as set of one-thing-well websites, but they mentioned planning to integrate the capabilities going forward)

    It's been six months since Elon took over Twitter. I have some thoughts on the "Twitter diaspora" and the current decentralized alternatives: https://www.techdirt.com/2023/04/28/six-months-in-thoughts-on-the-current-post-twitter-diaspora-options/

    @mmasnick I'm also impressed by all the development activity on top of Nostr.

    I just wish it wasn't so thoroughly dominated by cryptocurrency enthusiasts. In my testing so far, most of the accounts I've found that looked interesting to follow...are bridged from the Fediverse. If I were moving over there, great! But since I'm here anyway...?

    I'm hoping that will change if more non-bitcoin-people join, but I suspect there's going to be an awful lot of cryptocurrency-only features.

    So Google is now preventing people from removing location data from photos taken with Pixel phones.

    Remember when Google's corporate motto was "don't be evil?"

    Obviously, accurate location data on photos is more useful to a data mining operation like Google.

    From Google: "Important: You can only update or remove estimated locations. If the location of a photo or video was automatically added by your camera, you can't edit or remove the location."

    It's enshitification in action.

    @KelsonV@wandering.shop avatar

    @ajsadauskas @technology @pluralistic I ran into this a while back.

    1. It's not new
    2. It's not specific to Pixel photos.

    The app and cloud service just don't have support for modifying the EXIF tags, so if any camera has added GPS data, you can't use Google Photos to change or remove it.

    The estimated location is stored in the Google Photos database and can be modified within the app.

    You can turn GPS off in the camera app.

    KelsonV,
    @KelsonV@wandering.shop avatar

    @ajsadauskas @technology @pluralistic A few months ago I dug into ways to work around this with photos that had already been taken with the GPS coordinates. Annoyingly, you mostly have to save the photo, remove the tag, and re-upload it.

    https://hyperborea.org/tech-tips/gps-remove/

    KelsonV,
    @KelsonV@wandering.shop avatar

    @ajsadauskas @technology @pluralistic (I take a lot of photos for iNaturalist and reference photos for OpenStreetMap editing, so I'm constantly turning GPS on for those, and then back off for personal photos, and sometimes I forget.)

    KelsonV,
    @KelsonV@wandering.shop avatar

    @sohkamyung @ajsadauskas @technology @pluralistic I should give that a try! I use Vespucci for OSM, and it's similar in that it saves photos to its own folder, but it uses the default camera app, so again I have to turn GPS on before a mapping session and off again afterward.

    Pixelfed isn't perfect.

    People like you help improve and shape the project in many ways.

    We listen, and love constructive criticism.

    Please don't hesitate to give feedback on how we can improve our project!

    I've replied to the harshest critiques and almost every time I'm able to resolve the issue and change the opinion of that person.

    Pixelfed is powered by people like you, don't forget that ❤️

    @dansup My number one request: improved federation with other platforms

    In particular I've noticed problems with Mastodon comments not showing up on Pixelfed posts, and incompatibilities with GoToSocial (probably resulting from the different signature requirements).

    Realized that my tinkering with #GoToSocial, #Takahe, #CalcKey and #Snac2, continuing to use #Pixelfed, #Lemmy and #Bookwyrm, and looking for compatibility problems are part of the same impulse that had me trying out every web browser I could find in the early 2000s and deliberately using Firefox and Opera on Linux as my daily drivers instead of IE on Windows.

    It's a drop in the ocean, but it's my push for interoperability over #monoculture.

    I got tired of forgetting where the / are on various platforms and having to track them down, so I started a list.

    @cantstopthesignal There's a zillion of them -- I just started with what I could think of off the top of my head and what I'd used.

    There's a list here of some of the more notable ones:

    Plus the ones in the articles @blindscribe and @sohkamyung linked to.

    And a looong list here:
