When I hear people say in #ttrpgs that they like to make up the character’s backstory and personality as they play rather than beforehand or at a session 0, I think they must have players that are far better at improv than the ones I play with.
In my experience, if a character doesn’t have a backstory at the beginning, they never will have one.
@SJohnRoss our play wouldn’t be impossible without backstories pre-determined. The problem is that then when given an adventure hook, rather than the player finding a reason why their character would engage, they will sometimes just check out because “their character isn’t really interested in that” but this was never communicated to the DM (because no backstory, duh).
You can either give me hooks you will be interested in, or you have to find a way to be interested in what I give.
@jendefer@SJohnRoss what you said as a middle ground is still a backstory and something to work off of as opposed to a blank slate like I hear many people prefer.
Well, we have a trip to Seattle booked. Planning to drive around the Seattle-Tacoma-Olympia area looking for neighborhoods we wouldn’t mind getting an apartment in. Maybe even drive out to Ellensburg/Yakima.
@ThirstyGayGeek hopefully anyway. We need a neighborhood that’s cheap and won’t attack us for being gay and for my husband being brown. We are homebodies so the only reason to live near a city is really just so the politics are friendlier, not for access to bars or restaurants or anything like that.

If you want a further-left alternative to the Democrats, ranked choice voting is the only way it happens. Any other mode of campaign helps the far right, especially in swing states.
@queersamus@Dragonholley don’t buy games from studios like this. Doesn’t matter if it’s your favorite game IP, there are plenty of other games out there. The reason they get away with it is because people still buy it anyway.
If you really must, there’s the high seas. The developers already got their pay, they won’t get more or less just because you buy/don’t buy the game.
Filled with the urge to play a TTRPG again, and as much as my wretched little writer brain wants to start worldbuilding a THIRD FUCKING TIME, it's voice is drowned out by the voice screaming for justice for my first DnD character, who was essentially turned into a tertiary character by a very inattentive DM who decided that I'd get a lot of focus early on and then NOTHING for the rest of the campaign until it dissolved.
Like, a thing we established early on was I spoke to my God in my dreams. In them he'd provide me guidance and things of that nature and I enjoyed that aspect immensely when it happened. And the all of a sudden he stopped doing it, and kept putting it off, until eventually I just stopped caring because it felt like my character just ended up being along for the ride of his two favorites. And then finally after WEEKS of sessions where I hear nothing from my God he starts to do a random exposition dump, which he then cuts short for no apparent reason, and then sends me a very poorly formatted paragraph.
@MidnightRaven I’ll keep you in mind if we get a spot that opens. We play through Skype/Foundry. Planning to start Malevolence in a few weeks. Our play style might be irritating though as my players are quite slow (beginner box took us FIVE 3-hour sessions) and they like to goof around a lot, lol

So I’m trying to make a move to Lemmy from Reddit. I’ve learned that it’s best to search for communities by going to Lemmy.directory and searching there, then doing this complicated bit to search for and add it in my actual instance… inconvenient… but I don’t mind if it means getting away from Reddit.
But… Lemmy.directory is giving a bad gateway error. Is the site just temporarily down? Or is there a new instance I should go to for this?
@maikelthedev there is an app for iOS (that is super early development it seems like and won’t connect to Lemmy.blahaj.zone last I checked). There’s one for android too, but no clue how far along it is. You can turn on dark theme in the web version and it gets… kinda better. But still honestly ugly. I can get over ugly as long as it’s functional though.

Every time I’m close to solving a problem which would benefit me and society for me to solve, I am stopped because a rich person demands I give them something I don’t have. I can’t think of a single instance of prolonged suffering outside grief, and even then, where this wasn’t the case.
I’ve done a ton of work on myself but that has diminishing returns as I burn through my lifespan. My frustration may consume me.
I admit I don't know the difference between liberals and progressives. They/we are one big lump to me, but apparently they/we hate each other. Is there a test I can take to find out which members of the left I should be hating?
@estheria@LeeFromVT definitely agreed that pushing beliefs on others is a bad thing.
However, when a person has certain beliefs, like bigotry, I don’t tip toe around with “well you are entitled to your beliefs/opinion”. Because some beliefs/opinions are so toxic that the right thing to do is eradicate them.
