👋Hi, I'm Aaron, nice to meet you!
📽️ I (sometimes) make videos on the internet that vaguely resemble good content.
📸 I also sometimes do little photography experiments.
🐧Of course I run Linux, it's in the name :)
🦣 I wanted to try out Mastodon about 2 years ago, and I ended up here. Never used Birdsite!

How do people not know that Boeing has been manufacturing their planes to a worse quality standard than Tesla in recent years?

Go talk to anybody remotely adjacent to the aerospace industry, and if you catch the right person they'll go on a full rant about it.

:blobwizard: This is why Pipewire is so cool.

:blobaww: Now I can watch my collection of Dolby Atmos demos in all their glory! ...sortof.

:ablobfoxbongo: Just wait until I get a $30 7.1 channel DAC and put together a 12 channel Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 setup. It's gonna get crazy!

"Open source project xyz's team focuses on the wrong things so I've been making an alternative myself."

This kind of effort is often much better spent on actually fixing the problems with the original project. :blobugh:

:blobwizard: You don't need a $1000 camera or an hour of traveling to take a good Aurora photo.
:ablobcatbongo: You need a tripod, patience, and a decent point and shoot that with a manual mode and RAW output.
:ablobcatwave: Set the exposure time to "forever", the ISO to "grainy" and the F-stop to "eyes dilated at optometrist."
:blobcatsanta: This one was taken in the Chicago suburbs with a tripod and a Canon PowerShot S100 at ISO 80, F2.0, and 15 second exposure, then processed in RawTherapee.

:pixelfed: Got an account on Pixey...

:blobcatadorable: The new UI is pretty good.

Gotta say though, everything is WAY too big. I would love an option to scale everything down a lot.

My pointer finger on the scroll wheel hates me right now :blobcatalex:

Talking to IRC chats from Matrix feels like being an iMessage user and having an Android user join your group chat. :ablobcatwave:
At least that's what my friends with iPhones tell me, anyway. :blobcat3csmirk:

Reading a forum post with many replies about GPUs in Dell Optiplexes running hot :blobcat_thisisfine:

:ablobcatwave: All of the common Dell Optiplex Small Form Factor models have their x16 PCIe slot (the one that fits GPUs) right next to the power supply, instead of one slot away with clearance for airflow.

OF COURSE the GPU runs hot, it's basically suffocating :blobugh:

:xfce: Almost everybody I see recommending Xfce seems to throw in some disclaimer to the effect of, "It looks kinda ugly by default, but it's really easy to theme."

 I definitely agree with that; customizing Xfce is fantastic and incredibly simple, however, it shouldn't be something anyone has to do.
Why hasn't the default look of Xfce changed?

:ablobcatcoffee: Matrix would be a lot less complicated if they just let rooms be hosted just by the server they were created on.

Instead they made some kind of graph database consensus system resulting in way too many likely unfixable vulnerabilities:

I found a company on Amazon that sells assortments of resistors, capacitors, diodes, transistors, ICs, screws, nuts, standoffs, and a whole load of other things in these really neat boxes. :blobwizard:
I wish more companies sold their small part assortments like this... :ablobcatwave:

:ablobcatgrumpy: Why are so many Flatpaks saying "Info: app [app name] branch stable is end-of-life, with reason: This application is now being maintained as a Nix flake."

Why are you doing this to me? Is it too hard to just maintain a Flatpak and Nix flake at the same time? :blobugh:

I am NOT going to install another entire package manager just for your app. :blobcat_thisisfine:

I've been kinda neutral about Threads joining the Fediverse so far, but seeing how they treat usability from the Fediverse side, it's clear there is at least some malicious intent. :blobcatthink:

Back on Xfce temporarily...
It's absolutely one of my 2 favorite DEs, but I can't recommend it unless you're ok with quite a bit of fiddling to get it to look good.

(see my previous post for some context on what it looks like by default)
