๐Ÿ‘‹Hi, I'm Aaron, nice to meet you!
๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ I (sometimes) make videos on the internet that vaguely resemble good content.
๐Ÿ“ธ I also sometimes do little photography experiments.
๐ŸงOf course I run Linux, it's in the name :)
๐Ÿฆฃ I wanted to try out Mastodon about 2 years ago, and I ended up here. Never used Birdsite!

How do people not know that Boeing has been manufacturing their planes to a worse quality standard than Tesla in recent years?

Go talk to anybody remotely adjacent to the aerospace industry, and if you catch the right person they'll go on a full rant about it.

He said the UPS mechanics could've fixed it in a few minutes and that Boeing's people had basically no clue how to troubleshoot anything. They only really knew how to follow diagrams and basic procedures. It was like Dell's customer service in a way; they just weren't trained for it.

I recently had a conversation with the father of somebody in charge of plane procurement for UPS's commercial fleet and he told me a story about how they spent hours with Boeing's mechanics trying to fix dysfunctional wipers on a brand new plane. It was a spring installed backwards (or something tiny like that) on all of the plane's wipers.

Boeing's planes were once manufactured to the highest quality standards, truly befitting of the phrase "aerospace grade", but with pressure to make things cheaper for profit, things just got worse and worse. There's a word for that, it's called enshittification, and this is a textbook example.

I don't care if Brave is technically more private.

I don't care if ungoogled-chromium is technically better.

I don't care if it becomes less competent than Internet Explorer for modern browsing.

I will NEVER stop using Firefox (or its derivatives).
The free web depends on it.

New blog post!

I'm writing about Meshtastic, a decentralised, peer to peer communication network that uses LoRa radios.

My initial experiences with it are not that positive, but I learnt a lot along the way, and thought it would be useful to share with the world what I found out so far.

There's a bit about frequencies, antennas and all that hamradio stuff.

@stfn
You might want to look into https://reticulum.network and https://unsigned.io/website/rnode/
I found it to be an interesting concept, being a LoRa-capable network stack instead of a LoRa-only singular application.
Both projects are really cool, and I love the explosion of LoRa communication recently...

Every 6 months or so, I ask for examples of projects with great design. Products like @Figma @taiga @elementary and Audacity are just a few that come to mind.

I'm particularly interested in small to mid size projects with great . (as that's harder to pull off) Anything people can suggest?

Weirdly I think I have to suggest xfce here.
Literally top tier UX.
Not great looking UI unless it's themed, but that's basically its only downside.
It lets you do what you want and stays out of your way unlike Gnome, without shoving too many options in your face the way KDE does.

Budgie is close, and it looks so much better, but it's missing many of the small features and attention to detail that makes xfce so good.

I dislike TikTok, but the "ban TikTok" bill seems way too similar to those "surveil the entire internet" bills for me to endorse it.

I just feel like it might be setting a bad precedent, and I would rather deal with TikTok than the possibility of a complete banning of encryption...

 Instead of angering Nintendo, you all could be archiving everything on https://library.kiwix.org/ instead.

Y'know, for when the internet goes to heck and you don't want to go to the library and use an encyclopedia or (heaven forbid) look up developer documentation in a book. :blobcat0_0:

When developing software, it is good practice to assume the user is more clueless than you can possibly imagine yet simultaneously needs to perform the most advanced operations your program can achieve.

Good luck. :blobcatcoffee:
