I’m helping my neice navigate her online math course.
Isn’t the point of numbering things to make it easier?
Unit 3 is Chapter 4, and Lesson 4 in Unit 3 is numbered 3.3? 🙄
@human3500 Sounds about right. I had my struggles with Word over the years, mostly with numbering formats... The worst was the exams I would get from other people, in which three different formats were used (probably leftover from when they edited someone else's old doc), and if you moved anything it would all get screwed up. Often the first thing I would do is strip all the formatting and start fresh. Nuke it from orbit...
Wanna know how grumpy I am today? I just listened to two versions of “Both Sides Now,” the one by Joni, of course, and the one by Judy Collins, and they both annoyed me 😄
(Judy's version has drums, Joni's has a guitar bit that always sounds out of place to me)
btw, I have no musical talent to speak of, and am not worthy to lick the boots of either of these legends.
#Ottawa folks, if you are getting paving done, avoid Black Tar.
Paving is not rocket science, and I'm sure it works out for a lot of customers. But if you have the misfortune to get one of their incompetent crews, you will get:
• 1/4” of asphalt instead of the contracted 2.5”
• A driveway that starts falling apart (see previous point) in less than a year
• The company suggesting it’s your fault for driving on the surface too early (we didn’t), or spilling oil/gasoline (from my electric car?)
• The company management offering superficial treatment (cheap for them) instead of the needed replacement or refund (not cheap, so they ignore the suggestion completely)
• Endless bromides regarding their (non-existent) high ideals regarding customer service
Please don't reply with suggestions for further action. Assume we've pursued them.
Just don't give these jerks your money.
Just so I’m very clear - The “not rocket science” remark was meant as a sarcastic comment towards Black Tar trying to gaslight us into thinking there was something complicated involved with the installation, as opposed to incompetent and shoddy work. I appreciate the trades in general, and there actually is some interesting science involved in asphalt.
I wasn’t unduly pressured to post this disclaimer 😄
@human3500 In our conversations with other pavers as we tried to get a handle on what action to take, we heard a lot of disparaging remarks about how BT runs their business. Some of these folks are former employees/contractors.
I’m seeing this graphic making the rounds withouth attribution - many versions have the info at the bottom cut off. The creator is alienyrox2 on reddit (https://www.reddit.com/user/alienyrox2/).
After failing to see a total eclipse that swept right over my area, and missing out on the most spectacular auroral display of the decade, I’ve come to the realization that I am a minor cloud/rain deity.
My services are available, and for the good of all. All I ask is travel and accommodation.
Just visited the school I retired from four years ago to say hi and check out the new renovations.
Whiteboards everywhere!
(er, sorry, “vertical non-permanent surfaces“)
While I appreciate the philosophy of getting the kids up and working things out for themselves, I’m really wondering about the massive amounts of plastic waste in the form of depleted whiteboard markers. Personally, I hated whiteboards when it was mostly just me using one, because I was constantly running out of markers. I can’t imagine how they cope now that all the students are using them, as well.
This is clearly an “out of sight, out of mind” issue for most folks, and I’m sure the petroplastics industry is totally fine with finding new ways to make money. But it’s incredibly shortsighted.
I know all about the drawbacks of chalk, but those inconveniences seem pretty minimal compared to the waste generated by whiteboards.
Is there a third low-tech option out there that allows for fine detail (so no drawing in sand 😄) without the waste? Why did people stop using chalkboards? The dust?
It’s dark where I am, and the stars are placed very favorably* to check out Corona Borealis (the Northern Crown) to see if the nova at T Coronae Borealis has erupted yet. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a naked-eye recurrent nova.
(*Haha, just kidding, it's cloudy of course)
I made a little movie to show where the nova should appear, at roughly the anticipated brightness.
#Astronomy folks, the white-dwarf/red giant situation at T Coronae Borealis sounds very similar to the precursor to a Type Ia supernova. A little reading tonight has taught me that you get the supernovae with carbon–oxygen white dwarfs. What other kinds are there? At first it occurred to me that a red dwarf would eventually produce a white dwarf that was mostly H/He, but I don't imagine any of those have formed yet. Any hints or leads would be appreciated, I'm looking to improve on my recently-discovered ignorance in this area – Also any corrections to misconceptions stated above 😊
#Ontario and #CyberSecurity folks - My friend just got an email thanking her for getting vaccinated, with a link to click to access her vaccine certificate. She hasn't been vaccinated lately, so my alarm bells are ringing.
The link to click goes to the domain awstrack.me, which does not look like a legit domain for this kind of thing. On the other hand, the email is addressed to her personally (i.e. there is a salutation that uses her real name), with a minor capitalization typo that was in the definitely-legit emails she recevied previously. Those previous emails also have a link to click that goes to the TLD awstrack.me.
"awstrack” makes me think Amazon Web Services are involved, but that particular TLD is registered in Luxembourg, if I read the whois entry correctly. Why would our provincial health service be routing sensitive information through a European domain?
I suspected that maybe someone got vaccinated recently, and the OHIP number was entered wrong. But my friend checked the portal, and her last vax recorded was in last year, as expected.
