BREAKING: The pediatrics group suing to ban the abortion drug mifepristone has suffered a major breach. WIRED is reviewing 10K leaked files. The group promotes junk science & anti-trans views and has been labeled a hate group.

I don't have any problem with the event as long as @CNN appropriate challenges Trump and doesn't let him get away with lies

In the first 3 years of the pandemic (which quacks, pundits, and headline-writers told you didn't affect kids):

2,000 kids were killed by covid.

186,000 kids were hospitalized by covid.

A quarter million kids lost a parent or other care-giver to covid. Black & latino families were affected more often due to racist healthcare and work structures.

More than 2/3 of kids under 12 have not received even a single vaccine dose.

For the entire span of my life, people have tried to develop AI systems and anticipated a day when those systems can pass the Turing Test.

Now that day has arrived, and no one seems to care about Turing Tests anymore. Why not?

Is it that

  1. We're not actually there? It would take more than a few simple patches (google the answer to arithmetic questions!) on top of ChatGPT to pass a turing test?

  2. Arriving there makes it clear that the Turing Test never was the right metric?

NIH_LLAMAS,
@NIH_LLAMAS@mastodon.social avatar

@ct_bergstrom I kinda thought it had long ago become more part of the amusing history of AI than a serious thing. It wouldn't prove anything.

Regardless, maybe people are so acustomed to the concept of talking to machines as if they were people (in fiction and reality) that they don't really care so much if they can tell it's a machine. Robots are people, too, eh?

    Typical. I switch on @pbs news for like maybe the first time in a year, and who do I see in the first 30 seconds? Some useless Republican fake-scholar from Heritage Foundation opining about something Heritage knows less about than anything; foreign policy.

    I'm so sick of this shit. Our broadcast news media is a train wreck cosplaying as an airliner crash in the playground of a preschool.

    @shoq @pbs They will never accept as disproven the theory that the main problem with Republicans is not having been given enough opportunities to lie about stuff.

    I don't mean to be a Gloomy Gus, and I am very much hoping BS proves to be total BS, but @anildash is not the only one with this reaction. I've now seen others like it from people equally informed. Despite Jack's mistakes, I never write off anyone with that much money and access to talent and resources. If he attracts substantial media, he can leapfrog right over the Mastodon position and the whole Fediverse will take a hit. I've never see harm come from not underestimating an adversary.

    NIH_LLAMAS,
    @NIH_LLAMAS@mastodon.social avatar

    @shoq @anildash I don't think Jack Dorsey deserves another chance at being involved in social media, even if he might be able to do it well. There are probably lots of competent people out there who didn't sell hundreds of millions of users to an absolute villain (and are sufficiently disgusted by that).

    Good morning, Versians. I've been watching @CNN so you don't have to. You can probably tell by the steam coming out of my ears. What a hot mess.

    Even the 2nd string reporters now feel like 4th string. I assume the entry level pay is pretty dismal, lately. John Malone and Chris Licht and are the latest enemies of the people. The coming election coverage is going to hit next-level awful.

    I don't usually go for conspiracy theories. But sometimes my mind drifts, especially when I think about who funded Musk's Twitter takeover.

    I wonder: Would these people have paid billions for a third-tier social network? Or would they have paid billions to poison the watering hole where journalists and activists worldwide gather?
