Giving the Waterfox browser a try. I like Firefox but it seems to be starting to get a little bloaty, and I want to continue using a browser that’s not Chromium based. Waterfox is basically an even more privacy-oriented fork of Mozilla’s Gecko, but not to the point of breaking the web like some highly privacy-oriented browsers might.

After importing all my bookmarks and settings, installing my usual extensions, and even recreating my custom theme in Firefox Color, Waterfox is visually identical to my Firefox experience, just minus the analytical tracking in the background. And I have full access to Firefox extensions and themes. Using Waterfox from here on out seems like an easy decision. It even has some features that Firefox doesn’t.

It feels like I’ve been flying through my Cowboy Bebop rewatch, but I’ve only been doing my usual four episodes per week as I do with every anime series I watch from my collection!

It seems like I just watched Spike unintentionally rescue Ein from rare animal traffickers and now I just watched the series bid a fond farewell to Ed and Ein, and possibly Faye, too, but I can’t remember if she appears in the two-episode finale. (Please don’t remind me! My memory for that will get refreshed next week.) Either way, “Hard Luck Woman” is one of my favorite episodes of the series, and one of the most moving episodes from any series I’ve seen over the years. Even this time, I still got the feels from it.

With only the two part finale remaining, Cowboy Bebop remains one of my all-time favorite anime series. Watching it again now, it definitely stands the test of time.

Eight episodes into my latest Cowboy Bebop rewatch, and this series hasn’t aged a day since 1998. The writing, direction, characters, and design are all top-notch, and I know it’s not just my nostalgic attachment to the series saying that.

I had the same thoughts the last time I rewatched The Vision of Escaflowne, too. That’s another series I’m due to rewatch again, the last time being when the blu-ray for it was released, probably ten years ago now.

Was in the mood for something whimsical so I watched Ponyo again. That’s a film that can put me in a good mood every time. Ponyo is such a bundle of energy, and the story has the same sense of wonder and joy as My Neighbor Totoro. And Ponyo’s theme song is even more of an earworm than Totoro’s!

I just watched Howl's Moving Castle again. It's been several years since I last did, but I still had forgotten most of it! I can't believe it turns 20 this year... Howl is also the only Ghibli film based on a book where I read the book first. I also forget everything from that since I haven't read it in twenty years...

So despite the realization that 2004 was really that long ago, rediscovering Howl's Moving Castle was a fun two hours!

If you somehow forget that Kamen Rider Black was made in the 1980s, the episode with the city turf war between rival breakdancing street gangs will remind you. :akko_fingerguns:

I really feel like playing Resonance of Fate, but like, not exactly that since I've already played it. :akko_shrug:

Maybe I should finally get around to playing FFXIII-2 since Tri-Ace also made that.

NieA_78,
@NieA_78@sakurajima.moe avatar

@CavoriteLizard Oh, FFXIII-2 is so much fun. I didn't remember that tri-Ace worked on that one. Resonance of Fate was really fun too, especially once I cracked the battle system. And if you like tri-Ace and have access to PS2 games, you need to check out Radiata Stories.

There's a little detail I had forgotten all about in Final Fantasy VIII. When Rinoa uses Angelo Cannon in a battle, she gives Angelo (her dog) a little treat after he finishes the attack, before he runs off again. If you blink you'll miss it, but it's a nice little detail.

As expected, using the game assists isn't diminishing my enjoyment in replaying FFVIII at all. I still have to draw tons of magic and level up if I want my attacks to do any kind of significant damage, since unlike in the FFIX remaster, boosting attacks is not one of the assists in FFVIII. But having the ATB and limit gauges pegged at full is very convenient for spamming everything during a battle, whether it's drawing magic, attacking, using limit breaks, or summoning GFs. I can get in a dozen turns before the enemy's first strike. Plus HP stays pegged at max, making the party virtually invincible anyway.

I'm not dreading getting to the stage near the end where I got stuck on my last replay all those years ago. It's looking good for this to finally be the time I'll finish FFVIII. Still quite a way to go yet, though...

I've finished every mainline Final Fantasy game I've started over the years (VI through XIII. XI doesn't count since it was an MMO and I never played it), but VIII has always been a glaring gap in that accomplishment. (Well, I did start XV but ended up dropping it after a couple dozen hours. I just couldn't get into it for some reason.)

Started off spooky month by watching Tokyo Living Dead Idol again, because few things go together better than J-Pop idols and zombies. The film stars Nana Asakawa who was in the idol group SUPER☆GiRLS at the time. It's a fun horror comedy with good acting and production values, and some great fight scenes with the zombies. Definitely worth a look if you like idols and zombie movies.

@CavoriteLizard It is! Definitely check it out if you get the chance. It's fun and silly, but very well done for this kind of movie. Asakawa really carries it. I had never heard of her or SUPER☆GiRLS until I saw this movie and wanted to find out who she was, haha.

I always like it when an anime series that uses the mini-episode format has an episode without dialogue. It's such an interesting way to tell a story. I just watched an episode of Squid Girl that did that. Well... it technically broke the rule a bit, but not enough to disqualify it. 😅

Time to raid the anime shelf for two more series to watch.

First up from the backlog is Squid Girl. I first heard of this series quite a few years ago, but never really looked into it at the time. Then I heard some good things about it later on, and finally added it to my collection recently. It looks fun, so hopefully it will be!

And since I'm feeling nostalgic, it's time for another rewatch of a series from my early anime days: Outlaw Star! And now for the first time in HD on the blu-ray release. This was one of my favorites back in the early '00s Toonami days on Cartoon Network as I was getting further and further into the world of anime. I've watched it a couple of times since then (subtitled once I had it on DVD), but I can't remember the last time I did, so it's time to watch it again. It's been so long that I've probably forgotten most of it, but that's fine by me. I get to rediscover it all over again!

Celestial Method is going in a completely different direction than what I was expecting, and I like it. This is why I don't do any in depth advance research for anime series I want to see. (And why I stay away from spoilers in general.) Being surprised is a big part of the fun in watching something new for me.

Randomly found the first part of the Rayearth OVA today on VHS. Didn't know this existed before today. The story seems pretty different from the anime series based on the synopsis on the back of the tape. Should be fun! :Elaina:

NieA_78,
@NieA_78@sakurajima.moe avatar

@CavoriteLizard It's very different from the TV series. Like Escaflowne TV vs Movie different. You really need to see it all though if you can. It's only three episodes. Personally, I prefer the TV series, though the animation in the Rayearth OVA is gorgeous. And I love the ending theme song. Ah, the 1990s...

Manga Entertainment (remember them?) released the complete OVA on DVD many years ago. It's long out of print now, but if you can find it, it's worth picking up.

NieA_78,
@NieA_78@sakurajima.moe avatar

@cymaiden @CavoriteLizard Hmm, I don't see it on my copy. I have the Discotek remastered MKR set which has the whole series in one package so there is no second one. I even checked my previous remastered DVDs of the series which did have two parts and I saw nothing there. Unless I'm just not seeing it?

Or was there a reissue of the blu-ray set that included the OVA? Either way I'm still good because I still have my Rayearth OVA DVD. I think I bought the TV series three times on disc! The original DVDs, the remastered DVDs, and then the remastered blu-ray. 😅

NieA_78,
@NieA_78@sakurajima.moe avatar

@cymaiden @CavoriteLizard That would be why I can't find it. In North America, the OVA and TV Series are separate licenses and were released by different companies. I think Discotek still has the TV series license for North America, but nobody has the OVA right now.

Dismal Dismal Dismal

This season's anime offerings are dismal. Time to work on the backlog of things I should have watched but didn't and finish things I started and got distracted. Probably also watch KON! it been a while.

@NaraMoore There is no downside to watching K-ON! again.
