AP story on the reactionary momentum in U.S. Catholic dioceses <https://apnews.com/article/catholic-church-shift-orthodoxy-tradition-7638fa2013a593f8cb07483ffc8ed487>.

The thing that’s got me thinking is how this movement ties, on the one hand, things like Latin and incense, and on the other, hard-line doctrinal rigidity and broadly right-wing politics.

I’m actually curious, though, if there is a place for Christians who want a liturgically rich service (yes to Latin and incense) but more progressive politics (yes to Liberation Theology, say?).

PeterWyrm,
@PeterWyrm@social.wxcafe.net avatar

@tkinias Interesting thought. Maybe I would still be a Catholic if there were such a place. (Although that’s simplistic: the bells and smells weren’t that important to me, and my growing agnosticism was the real issue.)

    I think compulsory voting “works” not because it forces people to vote but because it forces the government to provide an opportunity for everyone to be able to vote. I would prefer that an individual doesn’t give a donkey vote. But some people having donkey votes is a small price to pay for the benefit of mobile voting booths in places like nursing homes & hospitals, or ways for people in remote communities to vote.

    Technically his statements are only infallible when he states “This bit is infallible” e.g. when the pope said in the 19th century that it’s an infallible teaching that Mary’s body was taken into heaven at the end of her life. 😂

    @rexi The “joke” at the seminary was that however many years you spent at the seminary, it would take twice as long to recover once you had left. I only spent 3 years there and left in 1991, so I’m almost normal now. 😜 (My Bachelor of Theology has been of much more use than simply shitposting on social media: it gave me entry to three different postgraduate programs!)

    What are YOUR feelings on the role of civil disobedience and nonviolent direct action in provoking actual change with respect to the climate emergency?

    ….and if you do approve of these actions, how disobedient and how nonviolent and what strategies do you believe are needed?

    (please boost if you would like to promote conversation on this topic)

    @breadandcircuses

    PeterWyrm,
    @PeterWyrm@social.wxcafe.net avatar

    @shojiwax @breadandcircuses I used to think that civil disobedience was not the right thing to do, and we should do things like: have legal demonstrations; vote sensibly; engage in the political process. I think that these things are still important but they aren’t enough. We need to inconvenience people to make governments sit up and take notice. I would prefer action that inconvenienced bureaucrats more than members of the public.

    PeterWyrm,
    @PeterWyrm@social.wxcafe.net avatar

    @shojiwax I just re-read my post, and my usage of “we” hit me, as I’m not participating in civil disobedience and I’m unlikely to do so in the near future. I think it’s amazing that people of various ages and backgrounds get in and do the unpleasant work.

    It's 2023. How the fuck is compose key (or something like it) not part of windows? Like, my options for typing accented characters are still "open up character map, copy and paste" or "learn unicode shortcuts".

    Say what you like about the weird blind spots of Linux development, but compose key is a super useful elegant solution to a general problem.

    Oh it gets better. Win+. brings up a dialogue box that makes it really easy to insert GIFs and emojis into my text BUT NOT ACCENTED CHARACTERS. Incredible work, guys. You built a solution to a problem nobody had, and you failed to solve the problem that was right fucking next door.

    PeterWyrm,
    @PeterWyrm@social.wxcafe.net avatar

    @Scmbradley I have used Macs almost exclusively for two decades. I now use Windows at work. I don’t often need an accented character at work, but it’s funny holding down the “e” key and getting a line of “eeeeeee” instead of the pop-up window offering me a choice of é, è, ê etc.

    I’m surprised and pleased that the Australian government will allow the people of Tuvalu to resettle in Australia. (Of course a better option would have been for Australia to have taken greater action on climate change decades ago and shown leadership on climate action, to reduce the chance of island nations like Tuvalu being inundated.)
