I was surprised reading this article! I’m a descendant of settlers/invaders, but I grew up on Gangulu country, on a farm about 40 km from Woorabinda, the town mentioned in this article. (I think that one of the factors contributing to the loss of the local language was that the Queensland government forced people from lots of different places in Queensland and who spoke different languages.) https://newsmast.social/@ausgeo/112544768489251893

Bicycle folk! I’m hoping for some help. I took a bike to the petrol station to use the air compressor. I had bought a valve that I was told would be an adapter between Presta and Schrader. I can’t get air into the tyre. I unscrewed the valve on the presta (and now the tyre is completely flat) but maybe my adapter is too short. @ash @stufromoz

Why doesn’t a French person have two eggs for breakfast?

Because one egg is un œuf.

@benroyce voting third part applies to OZ as much as it does to all countries I guess... and but yes fully agree

@benroyce @Lats @Heliograph
I think compulsory voting “works” not because it forces people to vote but because it forces the government to provide an opportunity for everyone to be able to vote. I would prefer that an individual doesn’t give a donkey vote. But some people having donkey votes is a small price to pay for the benefit of mobile voting booths in places like nursing homes & hospitals, or ways for people in remote communities to vote.

There is a youth counselor here who is counselling youths on why they should not tackle their problems by suicides which is “cowardly” move, who doesn't fear death?

PeterWyrm,
@PeterWyrm@social.wxcafe.net avatar

@JonathanMBR Oh, that’s disappointing. If someone feels suicidal they don’t need more negativity and guilt added.

I’m surprised and pleased that the Australian government will allow the people of Tuvalu to resettle in Australia. (Of course a better option would have been for Australia to have taken greater action on climate change decades ago and shown leadership on climate action, to reduce the chance of island nations like Tuvalu being inundated.)

hankg, to cooking

I've seen some ambitious recipes on modern cooking shows. What I've never seen is sweetbreads (throat lymph nodes or pancreas) and brains. Yet here is Julia Child in 1966 teaching her viewers how to make it so they can "get out of their meat rut of steaks, chops, saddle of lamb, Beef Wellington, or hamburgers". Minus the hamburgers that's quite a fancy and diverse rut, if I do say so myself. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4e8Fq1…

PeterWyrm,
@PeterWyrm@social.wxcafe.net avatar

@hankg I have never eaten sweetbreads, but I loved the brain fritters Mum cooked when I was a boy.

I went to a local market today to support the Yes23 campaign for the referendum on the Indigenous Voice to parliament. I handed out some brochures and chatted to some people. About 95% of the interactions weren’t rude.

Note: The Voice provides permanent representation and recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Constitution. (Indigenous people were not mentioned in the Australian constitution.)

Do you know the name of the musical that uses the Latin words of the Catholic prayer “Hail, holy queen” as lyrics in a song? (Maybe CW the answer, in case anyone cares…)

Sometimes I think I’m not prudish or conservative and then something hits me like hearing that one of the sixteen-year-olds has watched a tonne of Shameless (all that substance abuse and sex) or (worse) watching Ru Paul’s drag race with the other sixteen-year-old when there’s a segment where they have to reach through a glory hole to randomly choose a puppet. (And I thought that I was an EX-Catholic.)

I love the words that English borrowed from Arabic that have the definite article (= the) as part of the word: alcohol, algebra, alfalfa. Imagine if we had cohol, gebra, and falfa instead!
