I was surprised reading this article! I’m a descendant of settlers/invaders, but I grew up on Gangulu country, on a farm about 40 km from Woorabinda, the town mentioned in this article. (I think that one of the factors contributing to the loss of the local language was that the Queensland government forced people from lots of different places in Queensland and who spoke different languages.) https://newsmast.social/@ausgeo/112544768489251893
@PeterWyrm Aboriginal culture and language has been deliberately erased. I spent the first 25 years of my life in Australia. Other than a couple of generic bits about the Dreamtime, it wasn't taught.
I can tell you about Cook, Macquarie and countless white explorers, but when I looked up the names of the lands on which I grew up, the names are not familiar. I'd never seen them before.
I was taught Latin, but not the name of the land on which I was standing.
Bicycle folk! I’m hoping for some help. I took a bike to the petrol station to use the air compressor. I had bought a valve that I was told would be an adapter between Presta and Schrader. I can’t get air into the tyre. I unscrewed the valve on the presta (and now the tyre is completely flat) but maybe my adapter is too short. @ash@stufromoz
“We are tormented alike by what is past and what is to come. A number of our blessings do us harm, for memory brings back the agony of fear while foresight brings it on prematurely. No-one confines their unhappiness to the present.”
"Somebody here has had a successful COP, that's the 2,000 lobbyists. And you know, we're given crumbs to celebrate, but it's like asking us to celebrate flowers that will lie on our graves, you know, how do we celebrate that?"
A presenter at my online social-worker conference just said that the impact of artificial intelligence will be greater than that of electricity and the internet combined. #Artificialintelligence#health
I’m surprised and pleased that the Australian government will allow the people of Tuvalu to resettle in Australia. (Of course a better option would have been for Australia to have taken greater action on climate change decades ago and shown leadership on climate action, to reduce the chance of island nations like Tuvalu being inundated.)
@MarkAsser@PeterWyrm A cunning stunt, really. “Hey, look at us, we’ve taken in an ENTIRE COUNTRY of people affected by climate change. And that’s it, we’ve done our bit, everyone else can take on the rest of the climate refugees from the pacific."
I went to a local market today to support the Yes23 campaign for the referendum on the Indigenous Voice to parliament. I handed out some brochures and chatted to some people. About 95% of the interactions weren’t rude.
Note: The Voice provides permanent representation and recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Constitution. (Indigenous people were not mentioned in the Australian constitution.)
@jwildeboer I think Panasonic is also a market leader here in Australia. I’m planning to go to a shaver shop now that I’m armed with info from yourself and others. Mind you, should I be taking shaver advice from a man with a beard?! 😜
