This morning, police made more arrests at . I held a sign saying "support free speech" and "UCLA Faculty". A woman approached me to debate what had happened, and quickly devolved from charging students with antisemitism to the efficacy of vaccines. She was an alumna. I hope our conversation moved her some, but I'm not holding my breath.

Spoke to @CNN this morning about the violent dismantlement of the Palestine Solidarity Encampment at . The horrific escalation by Gene Blockโ€™s administration is sacrificing our student safety and academic community for political clout.

The encampment exemplified democracy, and its destruction only furthers the decay of what little civil society we have left.

Blockโ€™s decisions have resulted in rubber bullets - which can be lethal - fired at our students. There is word from those on the ground that a student was shot in the face. Faculty and students arrested, as police was cheered on by counter-protestors.

The same violent mob of white supremacists and alt-right supporters of Israel violently attacked the camp two nights ago. The level of state violence and suppression of free speech rivals that of dictatorships.

@LeBonk Telling people to commit suicide, even in funny rhymes, isnโ€™t cool. Block should resign, but stuff like this really crosses the line for me. Iโ€™d also be mindful of it because it affects other folks who are not Block but struggle with suicidal ideation and MH.

Our department statement about the shameful actions of Gene Block which put our students at risk. I have much to say about whatโ€™s been going on at and little of it good. Block must resign.

The students at the encampment, with whom I spent a part of today, are an example of solidarity and democracy. Their right to protest on campus must be defended.

Proud of my community for the protest yesterday. Grateful for a sensible administration that refused to cave in to the demand to militarize the suppression of ceasefire and divestment protestors. De-escalation is an important skill in todayโ€™s world, one we should foster and treasure.

Just like there was never going to be self-driving Uber taxis. Or Amazon Go supermarkets on every corner. Or hyperloops. Or earth-to-earth space travel on SpaceX rockets. Or level-five full self driving Teslas.

Just like there will not be a general artificial intelligence ChatGPT in the next couple of years.

They were all scams designed to lure dollars from investors and generate good PR.

It was all bullshit. It was always bullshit.

they use the same justification to do this in the bike lanes - especially the valet parking people in los angeles

@meganL if you're talking about the outdoor dining, i think we disagree on that front. CA's real estate lobby has been furious about it, using the same language... but i appreciate your posts and learning from the nevertheless. i agree it should be done in a way that does not violate RoW/accessibility.
